Like many British-era road names in India, the current generation invents spellings when the actual name has been changed and people try to remember the old name, as is common in Bombay. I have fixed "Magdalla Road" to "Magdala Road" as this is a famous battle and many Indian soldiers fought there with the British. The Google map shows the correct spelling. --Ash (talk) 00:47, 8 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is a mishmash of imperial and metric units with no converters

edit

In this article, some units are only given in imperial and metric, and this causes confusion. Both units must be given, like it is the norm in English Wikipedia, to avoid confusion. 95% of the world population use only the metric system. Multituberculata (talk) 06:35, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

From my talk: Only "25,520 sq.m." in the "Expanded terminal" section, and "14,000 sq.ft.", "10,800 sq.ft." and "3,200 sq.ft." in the "Cargo terminal" section, need to have converters added.. Primefac (talk) 09:06, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Surat AirportSurat International Airport – official name changed in the government gazette, pls change the name.[1]https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/centre-declares-gujarats-surat-airport-as-international-airport-101706700132791.html https://pib.gov.in/PressReleseDetailm.aspx?PRID=1986849 Starcruexz (talk) 15:15, 5 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

The Economic Times and the Air India sources use both the term, and this isn't exactly a WP:Independent source. According to WP:COMMONNAME, - Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable, English-language sources) as such names will usually best fit the five criteria listed above. The usage of the new term Surat International Airport should be significantly higher in usage than the one at present. Hence, it is still not the common name. Would require some time. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:06, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Here is the link to the officially published Gazzette by Government of India, announcing Surat Airport as Surat International Airport. E-Gazzette publication by Government of India Svvaniawala (talk) 17:37, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

The declaration above writes - "Surat Airport in Gujarat is declared as an International Airport with immediate reg". We are not discussing whether it is an international airport or not, rather we are discussing the name, particularly whether the term "Surat International Airport" is the most commonly used phrase for the airport or not in reliable sources. Besides, the gazette mentions the name as Surat Airport, that is there is no international in the name. Even if the official sources explicitly mention "Surat International Airport", it wouldn't make the change here unless most of the English reliable sources start using the new name. We use the common name not the official name. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:56, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Support The official name has changed, and in many cases the official name is the best choice to fit the criteria for the article name. I think that's clearly the case here on common sense grounds without needing to strictly adhere to WP:COMMONNAME - we're just adding "international" which is a common descriptor for airports with either international service or the ability to handle international flights, so it's not at all controversial. SportingFlyer T·C 23:26, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are quite a few airport international articles that do not have 'international' in its article name. WP:COMMONNAME should be adhered to. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:16, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Could you share references to show the change of the official name? Also, the generic mindset among Indian users is, if an airport is declared international, it needs to have the work International added in the name.  LeoFrank  Talk 11:43, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Why you are so racist for indians @LeoFrank if the airport is international then it should be called as a international airport, i am the resident of surat, i know better that what is commenly used term for Surat International Airport @Fylindfotberserk ... also here is some more sources stating Surat International Airport https://theblunttimes.in/gujarat-surat-international-airport-on-cat-bharose-passenger-safety-goes-for-a-toss/39768/ https://www.freepressjournal.in/india/gujarat-stray-cats-prowl-surat-international-airport-tarmac-raising-safety-concerns-watch Starcruexz (talk) 18:15, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Starcruexz: Oh please, stop with this 'race card' thing, you'll get blocked for such accusations. I had provided my points why the name change is WP:TOOSOON as of now. It may happen sometime later when most reliable source start using the new name, which isn't the case now. As User:LeoFrank has said Wikipedia can WP:WAIT for sometime. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:46, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
