Hyphen

edit

Over in the WP article on African Americans opinion seems to be that when used as a noun African American has no hyphen, but does when it is used as an adjective. I edited this article to reflect that. Thomas R. Fasulo (talk) 14:36, 31 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

"Combat ship"?

edit

"In 1961, he became the first African-American officer to command a U.S. Navy ship, the USS Theodore E. Chandler (DD-717).... When he took command of the destroyer escort USS Falgout (DE-324) in January 1962, he was the first African-American officer to command a combat ship."

Under what definition of "combat ship" is the Theodore E. Chandler not a combat ship? Any relevant references here? Chuck (talk) 16:02, 3 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

"Jouett a frigate"?

edit

DLG = Destroyer, Lead, Guided Missile. Later changed to CG = Cruiser, Guided Missile. NEVER a frigate. DD = Destroyer DE = Destroyer Escort FF = Frigate PC = Patrol Craft

USS Iowa (BB-61) (BB = Battleship)

USS = United States Ship. Normally applied to "ships of the line". A PC is not a 'USS' designated vessel. Proper name is PC-1264, not USS PC-1264.

Naval ranks are: Captain (not captain), and Rear Admiral (not rear admiral). Remember: the captain of a ship may not necessarily hold the rank of Captain. Many hold the rank of Commander. Ensign, not ensign. Ensign is a commissioned officer rank while ensign (lower case "e") is a flag. BIG difference.

And... not "combat ship" but "warship". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 214.28.226.229 (talk) 16:42, 22 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

"Legacy"?

edit

I visited Naval War College briefly and thought there was a program named for him there. Below is a link (but as I did not participate in group, didn't know enough to write the text on the program, just the name was familiar when he was featured on CNO's social media). https://usnwc.edu/Research-and-Wargaming/Advanced-Research-Programs/Gravely-Group
