Angle arrested today?!

edit

Is this true? 173.24.69.153 (talk) 01:37, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

You know that you could try clicking the link that is right there in that section of the article? Also, this talkpage is for discussing improvements to the article, not general discussion of the subject. TJ Spyke 01:42, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I highly disagree with that, and would like an explanation as to why. Gray Ninjakoopa 02:14, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Why what? Why this is not a messageboard? See Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#FORUM. As for why Angle stalked his girlfriend, that is in the article. Since this is NOT a messagboard, this discussion is over. TJ Spyke 02:23, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay I understand now, but where I'm from it's ideal to talk about events of the character the article is about. Sorry... Gray Ninjakoopa 03:13, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

"Amateur" wrestling

edit

I would like to note that "amateur" wrestling is not an appropriate, and certainly not the preferred label of greco-roman or freestyle wrestling that you see in colleges or the Olympics, etc (not the kind that is staged beforehand with regard to the outcome). Im fairly convinced only fans of "professional" wrestling label it this and again, is not the preffered label. If others agree or can confirm, please help improve wikipedia by editing. On a side note, i almost didn't know what this article was referring to with that label... 68.229.51.187 (talk) 15:22, 24 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Amaateur wrestling is the correct term, see amateur wrestling. Even FILA (the international governing body of the sport) uses amateur wrestling as the term [1]. TJ Spyke 15:29, 24 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I see no proof on the amateur wrestling page or on the referenced page that a correct term for Olympic wrestling is amateur wrestling. Olympic wrestling is the highest level of wrestling competition. So-called professional wrestling is only an act (albeit, a physically demanding one) that involves no competition whatsoever. (Unless debating who should win counts as competition.) To imply that it is the next step up from real wrestling at any level is inaccurate and unfair to athletes who wrestle. People don't refer to Olympic gymnastics as amatuer gymnastics or Olympic swimming as amatuer swimming.71.162.2.126 (talk) 19:23, 26 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
It's amateur wrestling, period. Of coarse the IOC is not gonna wanna call it "amateur" because that doesn't sound good. Same reason that don't use stuff like "minor league" for sports (baseball, for example, only allowed minor league players. MLB players were not allowed to play. Before 1992, only college and amateur basketball players were allowed to compete). The governing body of the sport uses the term amateur wrestling, they have the final say over it. Besides, the Olympics are a joke anyways (seriously, baseball is not in but RIBBON TWIRLING is? Ribbon twirling is not a sport, nor it synchronized swimming, table tennis is borderline at best, etc.). TJ Spyke 06:17, 27 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
You give no citations that your claims are true. And you still missed the point with your comparisons to the minor league. There is no level of wrestling higher than the Olympics. And the content of the Olympics does not determine whether the competition in each event is "a joke", especially in the case of wrestling, which may be the most physically and mentally demanding sport of them all with training as a factor. The Olympics are taken so seriously that Angle continued to work towards his gold medal even with a broken neck. 71.162.2.126 (talk) 07:16, 27 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Amateur wrestling is just the general term for the sport and styles and its why its used so there isn't an over explanatory title feel free to add any information which you feel is missing and is needed within the section, if you need more proof of the generalisation feel free to see the word Amateur, "For example, amateur athletes in sports such as basketball or football are not regarded as having the same level of ability as professional athletes.". Afro (Not a Talk Page) - Afkatk 09:32, 27 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I guess the problem with wrestling is that there isn't really a professional league (just some entertainment centers that like to call themselves such). Kurt Angle took actual wrestling to the highest level possible, but only his transition to physical acting is being called something other than amateur wrestling. I guess its something to think about.71.162.2.126 (talk) 23:16, 27 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
To the IP, did you CHOOSE not to read my first comment? I provided a link to show that the organization that runs wrestling (the same organization that the International Olympic Committee lets decide the rules for wrestling), uses "amateur wrestling" to describe it. Being called "amateur" has nothing to do with the quality of the sport and is not effected by the Olympics. Take figure skating for example, only amateurs are allowed to compete in the Olympics. Professional skaters are not allowed to compete in the Olympics. Are you trying to say that the amateur skaters are better just because they compete in the "important" Olympics. I don't get why this section is still being discussed. The original IP complained about the use of the term "amateur wrestling", I provided proof that the governing body of the sport calls it that, what more is there to discuss? What the IOC calls something doesn't matter. TJ Spyke 16:55, 27 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I did spend some time looking through it, and all I found is that they named themselve that and they sometimes refer to college wrestling as amatuer. The figure skating thing doesn't apply to wrestling because there is no "proffesional" wrestling league. (There's just some entertainment centers that call their act proffesional wrestling to attract audiences which one needs no "amatuer" wrestling experience to join. Kurt Angle is the only one to actually accomplish anything in real wrestling before joining them.) After College, the only real higher level up to go to is the Worlds and Olympics competitions.71.162.2.126 (talk) 23:16, 27 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Amateur wrestling is just the blanket term that covers styles such as collegiate wrestling, freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, etc. It is just a term, and as TJ Spyke said above, it doesn't refer to the quality of the sport or the experience level. Angle was a collegiate wrestler and then a freestyle wrestler (in the Olympics and World Championships)...so the term "amateur wrestling" is an appropriate term to summarize that period of his career. In addition, Angle refers to himself as an "amateur wrestler" in his biography. Many other books do the same. Nikki311 00:24, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
True, it can be a blanket term, but the issue here is, first and foremost, that it's a misleading term to people reading the page. And in the cited page, Angle seemed to be using it as more of a conversational term (one to differentiate between it and professional wrestling for anyone who might get them confused) than an official one. Nobody would get them confused here becaue they're in different sections. If amatuer wrestling is the most appropriate term, than the sport of wrestling itself should be called the sport of amatuer wrestling. (Professional wrestling is neither the next level nor a different branch. It's merely an exaggerated imitation for amusement.) Simply "wrestling" can also be used as a term that includes all of those styles. 71.162.2.126 (talk) 04:20, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, the sport is wrestling. Amateur wrestling does not include all wrestling, only certain styles. It's accurate and clear and no one calls the sport amateur wrestling, so it would be misleading to tell readers it is. TJ Spyke 17:06, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rear naked choke

edit

It probably doesn't matter, but since him using the CFCW for a year is in the finisher section, should Rear naked choke be there? I think he used it as a finisher when he was with ECW. Freebird (talk) 06:11, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

"pursuing the WWF Championship"

edit

The delivery of the WWF information in the primary entry is inappropriate. The overall tone suggests that Angle pursued and received awards for wresting victories while in the WWF. However, the WWF is nothing but a soap opera of staged events with pre-determined, scripted outcomes. The WWF information needs to be delivered more as the summary of a soap opera storyline and less as a chronicle of wrestling competition achievements. User:99.153.86.119 13:01, 23 March 2010

I agree 100%. Wikipedia reports these career events as if they are actual sports competition accomplishments. That is not accurate historical record integrity.

About the Crossface chickenwing as one of Angle's finishing moves...

edit

Does Angle still use the Crossface chickenwing as a finishing move? I haven't seen him use it as a finisher since 2000, which was 10 years ago...I think that the Crossface chickenwing should be moved to his signature moves... Gregorynovella (talk) 12:55, 24 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Birth of the "You suck" chants

edit

I don't think Edge started it. There's no verifiable source, and even if you search it on Youtube, the crowd was yelling "You Suck" long be4 Edge started it. I can link to it, but of course Youtube is not a reliable source. Either way, it can't be verified. 108.27.255.105 (talk) 16:32, 26 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Turning professional

edit

Someone added a bit saying that Angle was "turning professional" when he signed with WWE. This is misleading. It implies that he was making a living out of doing the exact same thing he did in the Olympics. Professional wrestling is very different from amateur wrestling, more different than say amateur boxing is to professional boxing. You're going from actual, legitimate competition to pre-scripted entertainment. Angle himself has clarified the difference between the two worlds of wrestling in at least one interview. --Jtalledo (talk) 20:08, 31 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Religion?

edit

I thought the article used to say he was Roman Catholic. At least he must be some kind of Christian. He can be seen crossing himself at his Olympic gold medal match (elsewhere someone might argue it's just part of his pro wrestling character). Anybody know? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.23.86.169 (talk) 19:39, 19 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Olympic wrestling isn't kayfabe. Sure, in TNA at one point as a heel he said he wanted to go back in time and make Jesus tap out. But he also said he didn't like black people and some other stuff that was obviously just supposed to rile people up as wrestling heels all do.

In real life he's defiantly a professed Christian. This 2010 page says, specifically, that he is Catholic, but lists no sources: [2]

More to the point, his MySpace page lists his religion as Catholic [3] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.20.243.213 (talk) 22:48, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Acting career

edit

Filmography is arranged from 2009 to 2011 but Television is arranged from 2011 to 2000. I think these should be consistent but I am not sure, should we list from earliest to latest, or latest to earliest? Y12J (talk) 18:19, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Italian-American?

edit

In this interview Angle says: "My mother was Italian and she was very good in the kitchen" etc. --Exorcist Z (talk) 15:11, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

He says a lot of things though... And he is marketing a commercial product in the video - Angle Foods has an entire Italian range. It might be best to wait until such time as other sources corroborate the statement before adding to the article. ŞůṜīΣĻ¹98¹Speak 01:10, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in Kurt Angle

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Kurt Angle's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "Slamboree":

  • From Scott Norton: prowrestlinghistory.com. "WCW Slamboree Results (1996)". Retrieved 9 April 2007.

  • From Rick Steiner: "Slamboree report on May 19, 1996".
  • From Bret Hart: "Slamboree report on May 17, 1998".

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 13:54, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Only Olympic Gold Medalist in Pro Wrestling?

edit

Should he really be recognized as such? Maybe the first in the WWE, but Anton Geesink won gold for Judo in the '64 Olympics, and then went on to wrestle for a number of years in the 70s. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.75.37.250 (talk) 16:07, 13 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Height

edit

I've been looking through many sources and some say 6ft 0in and others say 5ft 10in. How tall do you guys think Kurt Angle is? Stephen"Zap" (talk) 03:43, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

WWE and TNA list his height as 6'. OWW lists it as 5'10". OWW is actually probably more correct, but it's not unusual for wrestling companies to bump wrestlers heights and weights up a little bit. Since we list billed heights/weights and not actual heights/weights, 6' is what we list.LM2000 (talk) 04:25, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Why so many paragraphs in the lead?

edit

WP:LEDE: "A lead section should contain no more than four well-composed paragraphs". So? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:8E16:8300:A186:1052:EDAB:538 (talk) 21:30, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Done. There shouldn't be six paragraphs, period. 159.148.89.42 (talk) 16:31, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Overly detailed

edit

Aren't the sections on Kurt Angle's professional wrestling career overly detailed? They include almost plot-point by plot-point detail that would be forbidden in articles about movies. And since pro wrestling is about as real as movies are, shouldn't they be held to the same limitations? (700 words)

Linking Errors

edit

Somehow the link between List of NWA World Heavyweight Champions and Kurt Angle's title section where it mentions that he is a 1-time NWA World Champion has become disconnected. The link needs to be reinserted, I'd fix it myself but I don't know how to do that.
