the Duchy of Hull?
editIt seems strange (to me anyway) that Pierrepont's dukedom would've been created and attached to an area as small as a city like Hull. Most of the other English dukedoms were attached to duchies on the size of counties (Devonshire, Cornwall, Somerset, Norfolk, etc.) or to other areas considerably larger than just one medium-sized (in the mid-17th c.) city. Cities were more often attached to English earldoms and marquisates (Queensbury, Bath, Bristol, Winchester, Oxford, etc.) Does anyone know why Pierrepont's dukedom was for a city, rather than a larger area?
