There seems to be some dispute as to whether he was involved in King Philip's War at all, let alone if he died as a result. From "Colonial Justice in Western Mass":
Although Holyoke was commissioned an ensign in 1653, a lietenant in 1657, and later appears as captain in the records, he played no important role in King Philip's War or in earlier defensive measures.
