The railroad operated by the Genesee and Wyoming Railroad Company, herein called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, located entirely within the State of New York. The owned line extends northwardly from Greigsville to Pittsburgh and Lehigh Junction, 12.235 miles. The lines used under lease extend from Halite to Coverdale and from Retsof to Retsof Junction.

The railroad of the Halite and Northern Railroad Company, herein called the Halite and Northern, which is leased to and operated by the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, extending northwardly from Halite to Cloverdale, N. Y., 3.197 miles. The Halite and Northern also owns yard and side tracks, as shown in the trackage table in Appendix 1. The carrier also uses under exclusive lease the railroad of the Retsof Mining Company, a noncarrier, whose road extends northeastwardly from Retsof to Retsof Junction, 1.925 miles.

The carrier wholly owns and uses 15.449 miles of all tracks, jointly owns and uses 0.127 mile, undivided, of all tracks, and uses but does not own 8.772 miles of all tracks, which are classified in the trackage table in Appendix 1.


CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated March 27, 1899, under the general laws of the State of New York, as a reorganization of the Genesee and Wyoming Valley Railway Company. That company had been incorporated April 27, 1891, under the general laws of the State of New York. A receiver was placed in charge of the Genesee and Wyoming Valley on November 18, 1898, and its property was sold after foreclosure to Wm. B. Putney on March 7, 1899. Putney and his associates, representing creditors of that company, caused the incorporation of the present company, and transferred the property to it on March 27, 1899.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The entire owned mileage of the carrier, 12.235 miles, was acquired by it in the reorganization of March 27, 1899. Of this mileage, 1.39 miles, extending from Greigsville to Retsof, were constructed by or for William Foster, jr., and Charles Q. Freeman prior to July, 1891, and the remaining 10.845 miles, extending from Retsof to Pittsburgh and Lehigh Junction, were constructed by the Genesee and Wyoming Valley during the years 1894 and 1895.

The Halite and Northern was incorporated November 29, 1910, under the general laws of the State of New York, for the stated purpose of acquiring and operating a railroad between Halite, N. Y., and a connection with the road of the carrier. The road owned, 3.197 miles, was acquired by construction between September, 1911, and August, 1912.
