Wikipedia:Requests for feedback/2011 August 2

Hey guys, just wanted to get a page up for the album. I'm new at this so if you can give me a few tips i'd appreciate it. Also, If any of you know how or where to find usable images of album cover art, I'd also appreciate the information. Thanks.

Would like some feedback on this article. It is my first complete article.(mostly edits before) I will add more photos in the future. Spent a lot of time scouring it and linking it up to other articles and finding reliable neutral sources from educational institutions. I'm praying I did a good job.

Koheli (talk) 04:41, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your first article, you say? Are you trying to put people to shame around here?
Seriously, nice work, especially for a first article.
I confess I'm not a fan of the content notes. I don't like the look; at first, I thought there was a glitch in the rendering. That said, I've been thinking a bit about the distinction between explanatory footnotes and citation footnotes recently. Most articles only have citation footnotes, or if both, use the sane sequencing. I'll have to do some homework to see what is the preferred style, and see if I have any recommendations.
There may be some questions about confirming the copyright status of the images, but I'll leave that to someone else (which probably won't happen in this forum, it may be one of the image experts finding them and asking questions.)--SPhilbrickT 22:11, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so very much. This means quite a lot. Did a lot of hours of Wikipedia homework even before daring to write it. I'm so relieved.
As for photos, the photos are from a digital collection my family inherited and we all own the rights to use the photos. A large collection of Early 1900's photos. Is there some special language or code I need to put in the description of the photos to verify this?
Thank you again Koheli (talk) 01:07, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm doing more and more work with images, but still feel I have a lot to learn. I don't think there is any question you can use the images, but Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously, so sometimes has some hoops to jump through. I know exactly what to do on the pictures I take, and arrange for others to take, but older images have their own set of rules. My suggestion is to explain what you are planning at IMAGEHELP, and the people there are very knowledgeable and can tell you exactly what to do. Link the article so they can see what you have so far, and mention the plans to add material.--SPhilbrickT 01:26, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This will be my first wikipedia page if approved. Is this an appropriate page to be moved? I attempted previously to create a page for HEX-XP con, but the original page contained links to videos which have since been removed. Also, which categories can I add (I left that section blank) to the page? Thanks!

Prior to writing the draft I created 3 articles about SMS Billing Types but it was removed for copyright, which was dealt with and is no longer a form of copyright. Also, Promoting others, however I fail to see how I was promoting a business as I did not mention any?! Would you be able to check the article before it goes live for copyright/promoting issues so that I don't get blocked due to adding any more dodgy articles (that was not my intention!)

Could someone kindly help me with this article. I'm new at this & i would appreciate your help. Thank you.

Wangaire (talk) 12:40, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I added some changes to clarify the text a bit. Please take a look. Hopefully this helps. My first impression is that it appears to be an advertisement for a website. You may need to supply references regarding the people, poetry, etc. to develop the article. Marshallsumter (talk) 18:44, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking for feedback on this short article about leadership author Mark Murphy.

Grimesgw (talk) 15:02, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You did a good job in adding references. Overall, this article is a nice piece of work. Miguel AG (talk) 10:40, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nice start. I improved a couple of the refs, converting to the preferred "cite Book" template. You can do this easily as well, just copy the ISBN into Ottobib, click Wikipedia, then Get citation.--SPhilbrickT 17:39, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just looking to have this page reviewed. Thanks much!

Arvinahmadi (talk) 15:23, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The more general article on 'Dominant group' may have been confusing. I have added appropriate references and definitions for this specific use of the term 'dominant group'. More references using the term can be provided. I have included the apparent original use of the term in evolutionary biology, although there may always be an earlier use not yet discovered. Here, though is Darwin's use of the term; hence, his definition.

Feedback is greatly appreciated. Please, let me add that more recent definitions may have modified the term. This may require a 'history' section to include Darwin's use.

Please provide feedback. Thank you ... rs

Rick Szymanski (talk) 17:18, 2 August 2011 (UTC) A few comments:[reply]

  • You need references to reliable sources. You had two references, but they were to Wikipedia, so I removed them. They are already wikilinked.
  • I assume the reference to Fair Warning is a reference to Fair Warning (band)?
  • You included a quote, it must have a referenceSPhilbrickT 11:46, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is my first attempt at a Wikipedia article. I would like some input on if I am on the right track and suggestions on what I need to do next.

Blarrib (talk) 19:15, 2 August 2011 (UTC) It is an interesting read, and one which shows a fair amount of work, yet I have a number of concerns:[reply]

  • Have you read Notability, in particular, the sentence: "If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject,"
  • The San Francisco Call probably qualifies as a reliable source, yet the link is to a private web page, where, presumably, someone has typed in the text. That is probably acceptable, but the citation to the source should be improved.
  • The sources listed as California Historical Society are links to personal web sites of a relative. What is the connection between Bob Larribeau and the California Historical Society?
  • I don't understand the use of the word "botanicals" in the opening sentence. Do you mean "botanical paintings"?
  • Much of the information in the opening sentences is not cited. How can it be verified?
  • Union Fish Company should not have an embedded link
  • The awards listed will certainly help with Notability, yet I see no citations.--SPhilbrickT 21:54, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have included new citations based on scanned documents. I had transcribed articles into the web site because the images I had were to poor to use directly.

I have no connection with the California Historicas Society. They have provided materials to me from their archives.

There is now a citation to a printed document preceding the awards list.

Let me know what more I can do. Thanks for your help.

I have created a new article featuring Dr. Wolfram Samlowski. Please let me know what I must complete, if anything, for the article to be published.

VegasWriters (talk) 23:40, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A few comments:
  • You need references to reliable sources. You have some embedded urls, some of these may be converted to references, but they need to be in proper form. See WP:Referencing for beginners
  • Braces are for templates, you seem to use them around wikilinks, where they do not belong. (I cleaned them out, and fixed the info box)
  • It is already published
  • Do you have DOIs or PMIDs for some of the publications? If so we can improve the referencesSPhilbrickT 12:02, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
