Overview

The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (SAS) was formed in 1780 and has been producing information ever since, including books, journals, excavation reports, lectures (which are now video recorded), and the Scottish Archaeological Research Framework. They have over 2,700 members worldwide. The history of the Society tells the story of many of Scotland’s Cultural Institutions.

The Wikimedian-in-Residence post is one day a week and is designed to:

● Assess how the work of the Society could be best aligned with Wikimedia and ensure that staff and members are enabled to directly contribute their knowledge and expertise to develop Wikipedia articles; provide training on Wikimedia editing, best practice, and volunteer engagement, to staff; and identify opportunities for content improvement/image releases.

● Work with the Dig It! project team on a programme of events (including two edit-a-thons) and activities within the Society and with partner organisations, establishing links between Society staff and members, Wikimedia volunteers and others and identifying areas of Wikipedia and sister projects that could be enriched with resources and knowledge from the Society.

● Be an advocate for open knowledge within the Society, developing policies, systems and processes which would allow greater collaboration between Wikimedia UK and the Society, and creating best practice documents as needed.

Progress narrative

The Wikimedian-in-Residence (WiR) has now been able to settle into the position and progress on the aims of the residency. This has involved running interviews of staff and stakeholders within SAS to develop a strategy on how the society can better integrate Wikimedia resources and ethos into the work they do.

The second of the two planned for Edit-a-thons was completed. This was at the central library in Edinburgh. This event has led to the WiR being asked to deliver another Edit-a-thon for librarians in October.

Furthermore, the WiR applied for and had their proposal for an SGSAH Internship to focus on running an Archaeology Loves Wiki photo competition. These internships are paid for by the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities and are open to doctoral students in Scotland. The Scottish Coordinator also applied for one of these internships and was awarded one too. There is talk of merging the two internships and a meeting is planned for the end of July to work out these details.

At the Women of Scotland Editathon the coordinating librarian approached the WiR about running another Editathon at the library in the autumn. The WiR agreed and now one is planned for the end of October.

Progress narrative

The WiR has begun this process. Meetings have been held with different members of SAS staff and more are planned in the next quarter. These interviews are informal and involve the WiR talking with different members of staff about their roles and their style of working. The information from these interviews are starting to be used to write up the policy/plan.

Projects/events in development (relating to any goal), if any

The WiR applied for and got an SGSAH Internship to focus on running an Archaeology Loves Wiki photo competition. These internships are paid for by the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities and are open to doctoral students in Scotland. They last for 3 months full time but can be spread out over time e.g. part-time for six months. The Scottish Coordinator also applied for one of these internships to work on WikiData and was awarded one too. The feedback was that the reviewing committee rated both projects very high. Both internships might be merged into one. There is meeting planned for the end of July to discuss the details of this. The closing for applications is beginning of September and we should have this internship in place by October.
