DYK

edit

Hi. It's been awhile. I hope you have been well.

If you see fit, would it be possible to propose this as 5x expansion DYK? I'm happy for you to get the DYK credit. And I'm happy to do the check of another offering at DYK if it is proposed.

... Shachar Sagiv, who is slated to represent Israel at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the triathlon, is a brother of Ran Sagiv and a son of Shemi Sagiv, both of whom are former Olympians?

Supporting articles are here (Triathlon Start List for the Paris 2024 Olympics) and here (that the brother and father are Olympians).

Thanks. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:DD64:E22E:2B9C:8DC (talk) 20:26, 10 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Done at Template:Did you know nominations/Shachar Sagiv. I've added a citation needed tag for the date of birth. Schwede66 03:10, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so much. Will follow up. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:70E5:5973:F5E4:C4D1 (talk) 00:48, 12 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Good article

edit

I enjoyed reading your bio article. Very impressive. It’s nice to actually put a face to a wiki handle. Best wishes, Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 03:45, 15 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for stopping by and for offering your kind words, Mr Serjeant Buzfuz. It's much appreciated. It's all my wife's fault. 😊 Schwede66 03:50, 15 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Obviously, she is an editor with concern that notability is recognised fairly! Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 03:52, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Query about Ostalgie article

edit

Hi Schwede66, could I get your opinion on a word used in the Ostalgie article? I think it may be a mistranslation of a German word. The passage is:

"the term "ostalgia" is often misunderstood as a lack of willingness to integrate, an uproar to reverse German reunification"

it’s the word “uproar” that doesn’t seem right; “attempt” or “tendency” would both strike me as better. Thanks! Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 03:51, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Agree, Mr Serjeant Buzfuz; "attempt" would reflect the source better. Schwede66 03:57, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Fixed it. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 04:01, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Kia ora Schwede! You may already be aware of this, but figured I'd mention it on the off chance that you're not. I recently came across this tool which allows you to search for specific strings on wikipedia, including formatting - for instance, checking whether a certain roving IP editor has removed macrons via piping the link. I ran a cursory check for [[Taupō|Taupo]] and it came back with 16 results, so it seems like it could be a useful tool. Was about to clean them up, but figured I would leave them for now so that you can take a look for yourself. I've already noticed some other revisions that seem to fit the pattern through looking at pages found through the tool, such as here. Turnagra (talk) 10:12, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

That's excellent. Thanks for drawing my attention to it. Schwede66 10:34, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
An observation on use of the tool from someone very used to editing articles in other dialects of English including the complexity of international European contributors who have been taught American English or a few European languages and don't stick to EU international English. Macrons in official names should be default in articles in NZ English but British, Australian, Irish, Canadian or American or other International English articles perhaps not as not common usage. I myself would not revert a piped link if article not mastered in NZ English if this not an official NZ name name but refers to NZ English article name. ChaseKiwi (talk) 10:49, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that's not the issue here. We have a roving IP editor running around who is piping those links, and in those cases, it's macron vandalism. Schwede66 10:52, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, only made point as issue in List of locations with a subtropical climate. Of course I am probably inconsistent and change Zurich to Zürich as I lived in EU for almost as long as lived in NZ and am starting to be influenced more by Scandinavian languages and have got quite irritated by American imprecision with regard to Scandinavian geographical names. ChaseKiwi (talk) 11:12, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's a fair point, but with regards to that specific page it fits the pattern of what we've seen - an IP account whose only edit has been to remove a macron via piping (rather than using the redirect) with an edit summary mentioning either spelling or English usage. If it were a good faith international edit I'd expect them to just use the redirect instead of piping to remove the macron. Turnagra (talk) 19:57, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

BLP noticeboard

edit

I could really use some help at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard#Ana Roš. I'm fairly certain removing unsourced content from a BLP is covered per WP:3RRBLP, but the IP comment on that thread has rattled me somewhat.--Launchballer 12:19, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to hear that, Launchballer. You are correct that unsourced BLP content cannot be tolerated. In addition, if the person who is giving you a hard time is sitting right next to the subject, then they have an obvious WP:COI and shouldn't be touching the bio. I can't intervene right now because it's time for sleep; it's after midnight. Schwede66 12:37, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
It seems this has resolved itself. Let me know if anything is outstanding, Launchballer. Schwede66 21:19, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Earthquakes

edit

"My head it at Christ's College"

For the past few weeks I've been working on Draft:Timeline of the Canterbury earthquakes. It currently has 270 sources, which is my biggest project by far, and it'll probably be months until it's finished. I keep noticing that you'd taken a lot of photos about the topic (this one blew my mind and is my favourite), so you might be interested in helping out. If not, then no worries -- this subject fascinates me more than I imagined possible. ―Panamitsu (talk) 08:41, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Haha, have you see the other Rolleston statue photo? It's quite funny. Not sure what my favourite earthquake photo is. It's either River Road or Fitzgerald Avenue. There certainly wasn't a lack of interesting things to photograph, that's for sure. What I've got on at the moment is a draft that I should really finish and another draft that's been sitting there for a while. But I might focus on a few things Olympic Games for the time being. After the Olympics are over and the two drafts are published, I may well want to lend a hand.
In terms of my own big projects, I once came across Living Australian knights and dames (36 of them) and thought we should have the equivalent article for New Zealand. Little did I know that our list is a tad longer (and Paora keeps it up to date – thank you). And List of New Zealand rowers at the Summer Olympics turned out to be quite the exercise, and that one is in need of getting another update. And the List of chairpersons of district health boards saw me trawl through 20 years' worth of press releases before I had nailed that one; I'm reasonably confident that it's complete. Schwede66 09:16, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yup I've seen that picture and had a laugh. The time capsule under another statue was an interesting read. Oh yes, I quite enjoy looking at road damage too. I've always wanted to stand in the cracks.
That amalgamations draft must be really difficult to find sources for, and the chairpersons one must've been especially difficult due to how unbelievably boring press releases can be. Well done. I did a similar thing for Napier Technical College and after combing thorugh about 600 newspapers, I decided that I would never do it again. ―Panamitsu (talk) 10:08, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I once saw a YouTube video of kids building wee ramps and jumping over the cracks in Fitzgerald Ave on their skateboards. One of them hit a wee pebble, which stopped the skateboard dead and the kid went head-first into the gap and was swallowed up. Those cracks were impressively wide and deep (1.5 m deep easily). Schwede66 10:13, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Haha I think I've found it. ―Panamitsu (talk) 10:38, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Awesome. No ramp involved, though; at least not in Fitzgerald Ave. Was many years ago that I watched it. Schwede66 11:08, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Right, have now read your draft. Good work thus far, and nowhere near finished. Good things take time. Schwede66 11:18, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'm not familiar with Christchurch so I'm walking in blind, so it's nice to have someone familiar with the area spot my errors. That's right, I've still got five years worth of Cera's press releases to go through. ―Panamitsu (talk) 11:22, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think I have three large boxes with press clippings (all nicely labelled with date and page number, etc) that I can go through one day. That's an absolute goldmine, given that so much of The Press content has disappeared from their website. Schwede66 11:24, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Speaking of The Press, have you noticed a discrepancy between its printed articles and the ones on Stuff/ThePress.co.nz? In making that timeline I had come across several citations on Wikipedia that I was not able to verify. At first I thought it was an error from a Wikipedia editor, but it's happened so much that I think it might be the source. I don't have any physical papers so I can't test my theory. ―Panamitsu (talk) 22:39, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, there is a discrepancy. Sometimes it's one day (i.e. when they publish online the day prior to the story appearing in print). Sometimes it's a completely different date, and that's caused by a website upgrade where dates got mangled (in that case, I think the date as it now appears online is always the first of the month, but that may not always be the case). Schwede66 00:14, 25 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah I meant the text inside the source rather than the date, but that makes sense. ―Panamitsu (talk) 00:28, 25 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, yes, they often have completely different titles online compared to in print. Very annoying and confusing. Schwede66 00:30, 25 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
For example, New Regent Street. It says The Press described the opening as an "anti-climax", but the given source does not say this. ―Panamitsu (talk) 00:30, 25 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've had a look on ProQuest (via my Wikipedia Libray login and if you don't know what that is, I recommend you should look into it) and cannot find an "anti-climax" article that relates to New Regent Street. I'd nuke the comment, to be honest. Schwede66 01:33, 25 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
