Greetings!

Thank you very much in advance for any guidance you may offer.

I am experiencing difficulty in finding citations from newspaper articles dating back to 1990 and before. Is there a central referencing search engine for old newspaper articles? I am specifically trying to find a front-page photo in USA Today between Oct. 15-29, 1990 of former Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson raising his hand in a victory salute. This has historical significance.

I was a newspaper reporter on the U.S. West Coast, then with the Associated Press worldwide, so all of my journalistic work was published between 1970 - 1998.

Separately, challenged on getting citations marked up correctly (if I ever FIND any to cite). Single attempt not pretty.

You have an answer at Teahouse!

Hi! I have answered your question at Teahouse, but I want you to be aware of something. The tone you had in your question there implied you felt like you were being conspired against. Your article at AfC has no references on it whatsoever. It could have been on something as uncontroversial as a mountain or a town and it would have been denied. The attitude will not serve you well here at Wikipedia. As it is a collaborative effort, someone will always be changing, critiquing, modifying, and reverting what you do. It is just the way it works. A battleground attitude, which probably served you well in journalism, will do nothing for you here, except perhaps get you blocked. I see you are looking for an adopter. I applaud you for that. It is the single best way to learn your way around. I wish you good luck, and I will be more than happy to help you with any technical problems you may have. Just give me a bump on my talk page! Gtwfan52 (talk) 06:45, 27 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Arne Carlson

edit

There's no question that coverage of the Carlson campaign would be a worthy addition to Wikipedia. As has already been noted, but I will reiterate, references do NOT have to be online. However, lack of reference is a problem.

Color me a bit confused. Adding references for newcomers is a bit challenging, as it is not close to obvious how to do it. But, I see that you added references to Arne Carlson successfully, so I'm not sure where the roadblock is. I can help if you need help. (I am trying to multi-task, writing this while listening to my family so I may have missed something.)
