Bass guitar

To be honest, I found the whole etymology debate a storm in a teacup.

As far as the electric bass is concerned, there is no doubt that Leo Fender designed the original Precision Bass to allow guitarists to fulfil the double bass role in a group. Thus it can rightly be said to be derived from both guitar (playing position, frets [hence "precision" for guitarists unused to fretless instruments], body shape) AND double bass (tuning, longer scale, intended musical role). --Dburgess 03:25, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

" No doubt" and "rightly"? Please do your research. Leo fender did not design the first solid body, horizontal, fretted electric bass. I suspect he was very aware of the widely publicised Audiovox "electric bass fiddle" of the late thirties. The the original Precision Bass was a replacement for the double bass. The "Precision" label was a reference to the fact that imprecise intonation sounded awful when amplified and particularly bad in studio recordings. The etymology debate may be a storm in a teacup to people who don't care, but it is ignorant to label a bassist a guitarist. The fact that the design made it easier for a guitarist to play a bass instrument did not make a guitarist a bassist. Believe me, I have seen plenty of guitarists playing a bass and it is just bad bass playing. Bass (disambiguation)

I think it serves no useful purpose, but there are some users who feel it necessary to have a disambiguation page, and when they spot one doesn't exist with the word 'disambiguation' in parentheses included in the title, will go and make one. I think it is therefore best to keep it as is, so that everyone can see it is not really doing anything because the 'bass' article is doing it. The point is that people continually and unthinkingly create links pointing to 'bass' without realising it's ambiguous, but they don't create links pointing to 'bass (disambiguation)' unthinkingly. Therefore it is 'bass' that needs to be a disambiguation article for all those following such links. We could then point 'bass' to 'bass (disambiguation)', but it hardly seems worth it. Lyke Wake Dirge

You asked about those 2nds in my transcription of the Young Tradition version of the Dirge. I did that many years ago for a folk band that I played in at the time, then more recently found it and adapted it for two tenors and a bass viol. However, I don't think I have changed any of the lines (intentionally). Certainly, I wrote down the first two bars of verse two with different harmonisation (and different tune) from verse 1. My recollection is that verse 1 starts with the middle voice in unison with the top voice and then repeats the same phrase in bar 2, as I have notated. Verse 2, bar 2, looks like F-D-E in the top part, D-D-C# in the middle, and Bb-G-A in the bass. I agree that my verse 1 does look a bit odd. I still have the vinyl album and will try to play it at the weekend and check whether I still agree with my transcription! Also, I will check the original key (which I have almost certainly changed at some time) and make sure that I have the parts in the right order (I sometimes have difficulty telling which is the top part and which the middle). I had another listen to the Dirge and the original seems to be a tone higher than I wrote it (I probably transposed it at the time I did the version for viols to make it nicer for the bass viol). I have updated the copy on Wikimedia. However, I still think I have got that second bar pretty much right. The definition can easily be altered to conform to what was obviously your true intent; I'll leave you to puzzle that solution out for yourself. More seriously, you have stumbled upon a boo-boo that threatens the very foundations of everything we think we know. Worse even than that, your unwitting discovery has so agitated me that I can no longer function as productive member of society. I must do something to relax. Hi. Yes, I see it's been deleted four times already. Only an administrator can protect a page against recreation by normal users, and is usually done at their own discretion for articles that get recreated repeatedly to the point of becoming a nuisance. Living waters

Interesting question, which we are now trying to straighten out at WT:CSD--the original wording was "groups" and it was interpreted as meaning bands and clubs. I think the intention is still the same, but who can say what the consensus around here will develop?. In the meantime, it's safer to use prod--which generally works just as well. I almost always use prod myself, though I have the ability to delete in a single step.

My feeling on the immediate issue is that anything which would be known to give rise to a controversy at AfD should be speedied, and local churches and congregations generally do. There is no real consensus on them or other local articles (incidentally, I almost always say to delete them, but there are one or two people who speak up for them all. ) And more generally, there's been a problem with people nominating articles on probably notable people or things for speedy as non-notable, or no content. So some admins who have been actually deleting when it doesnt match the rules have been getting flack, & I want to stay far clear of that. DGG (talk) 20:09, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

OK, but seeing as the template itself cites "It is an article about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content that does not assert the importance or significance of the subject. " (my emboldening) then I'm quite happy with speedy deletion rather than prod. John Donoghue disambiguation

Hi

Your question of what I was doing with the bare disambiguation page came in the middle of a series of small edits I was making. I noticed that the link to John Donoghue provided on a list of distinguished Brown alumni and faculty was in fact a link to an article about a 19th century pioneer of Australia. I had never done a disambiguation page before, and after a brief trip to the sandbox, I tried it out on the new page.

Greenhill & Company article deletion without a trace

Hi Pablo. This paragraph is not about the underlying question of whether or not the article should be in wiki, but instead about what happened to the article and related edits once you flagged it for deletion. I'm trying to do some research to understand how Wikipedia works with respect to the above removed article. Perhaps this is the way Wiki normally works, but there are a few things that seem odd. First, there appears to be no trace of the deleted article. Second, all record of contribution edits are missing. Thus, not just the original edit which created the article about Greenhill & Co., LLC. is missing from my contribution history, as is your edit flagging the article for speedy deletion missing from your history, but my edit requesting review of the flag. Also missing are the articles Talk page and any edits to it. This includes my history lost the logging of the edits to the tthe Talk page for the article. Clearly, my intent was to initiate a discussion but it appears that the article was deleted solely based upon your flag. Could you explain your comment that you were not able to delete it? You obviously were able to flag it. Who deletes it, is it just an automated process? Thanks in advance for your help. I'll independently look into the process for bringing the article issue for an administrator / editor to appeal your flag and don't want that issue to cloud my genuine failure to comprehend what might likely be ordinary course process for wikipedia "spam" deletion. Again, I appreciate your alerting me to flag as soon as it was done. I do not question your motivation, just wish that more time could have been spent on the facts. Hi. This article is copied directly from the page at officialmafia.com. That's one reason for deleting it, you can't post pages that are copies of other pages.

There is no assertion of notability, and no independent, verifiable sources quoted. In fact there is no proof that this person exists - your assertion that you have met him is not enough.

You can see why they might be confused - you do identify with Corinna a lot. Anyway, as I said before, the page can be edited by anyone (check the page history and you will see a list of edits). The more verifiable, independent sources you have, the better.
