Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Hello, Mattcop11. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. S0091 (talk) 21:58, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mattcop11, it is clear you have conflict of interest so please make the appropriate declaration. If you have questions or need help, you can ask at the Teahouse. S0091 (talk) 19:31, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi @S0091 , I do not have a conflict of interest. This is the first of a series of articles on millionaires from my home state Connecticut. I am new to posting on Wikipedia and I would appreciate it if you could give me some pointers on how i could better write these articles so i do not come off as having a conflict of interest. Looking forward to hearing back from you. Thanks! Mattcop11 (talk) 19:53, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Mattcop11, is clear you know Raveis, either that or you were not honest when you declared his photo is your work. Either way, some clarification is required. S0091 (talk) 19:57, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@S0091 , Thanks for the quick reply! Like i said i am new to Wikipedia i wasn't aware that it actually means my work and not just my work i am doing on the Wikipedia website. It isn't my work meaning i did not take the photo. Is there a way i can change that? As you can see in the picture details it was not taken by me. Mattcop11 (talk) 20:04, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
If it is not your work, then it is a copyright violation as copyright belongs to the photographer (unless they released the rights). I will request it be deleted. As for writing articles, you are writing them from a fan point of view rather than a neutral party. A Wikipedia article should only summarize what secondary independent reputable sources have written about a subject. The about part is important. For example, the New York Times is a reputable publication; however, if the article is simply a Q&A type interview which contains largely what the subject says about themself, it is not independent so not usable. I will try to find a simple biography you can use as a guide but see Your first article. I will leave some additional information about editing Wikipedia. S0091 (talk) 20:19, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Fan point of view was not the best page to link so see neutral point of view. S0091 (talk) 20:33, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@S0091 , Thank you i will take a look at all of these. Should the NYT article be deleted? And if i find out the photographer released the rights to the picture how can i use it without saying that it is my own work? Will you be the one working with me the whole time throughout me trying to get my article posted? If so i appreciate the help and guidance! Mattcop11 (talk) 21:14, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
The photographer would have to release it for anyone to use not just Wikipedia, see WP:Requesting copyright permission but I have to be honest, I still suspect you do have a COI otherwise why go through all the trouble, especially for what is likely a non-notable realtor/business person when there are likely subjects that are notable? No, I will not be working with you. I just happened t be the reviewer who chose to review the draft, suspected COI, etc. If you are aiming to write about Connecticut millionaires, I honestly suggest picking a different one by starting with sources first before choosing the subject. Local coverage, WP:primary sources, interviews, etc. is not going to be helpful for notability. S0091 (talk) 21:28, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
