Griffins in Nature: Origin of Myth or Myth of Origin?

edit

Excepting the theory of the griffin (or rather "its" bones) as fossilized dinosaurian, there is no evidence to suggest that griffins as depicted in legend or heraldry ever actually roamed the earth. However, when one considers that, traditionally, griffins have been depicted as having a carnivorous quadrupedal anatomy, as exhibiting intra and interspecies social behavior, and as demonstrating an unsurpassed capacity for vigilance and fidelity, it seems clear that in the ancient and medieval imagination the griffin was an essentially canine-like creature, despite its admittedly remarkable feline and aquiline qualities. The non-canine features of the griffin are on the whole superficial and (literally) marginal: beaked mouth, protrusive eyes, asinine-ears, wings, clawed feet, giraffe's tail—the trunk of the animal was canine and, more importantly, so was its reputedly noble and valiant heart. The medieval European imagination recognized this quality in the griffin and made the beast a symbol of strength and vigilance, a guardian of the house (both in the sense of abode and lineage). The medieval imagination would have encountered the griffin, first of all, in oral legend, in Greek and Roman "natural histories" and in more contemporary bestiaries, but perhaps also in court menageries and in the field in the form of feral dogs, dog-wolf hybrids, and even possibly "winged" wolves.[1] - [2] It is in this light that one should consider such legends as the Beast of Gévaudan[3], said to have terrorized the mountainous countryside of Margeride (France), or the modern-day case of the Beast of Maine. [4][5] (Also see chimera, gargoyle.)

Well, it's been a week now that I've been an administrator and I'd like to take this moment to once again thank everyone who supported my RfA, and to let you all know that I don't think I've screwed anything up yet so I hope I'm living up to everyone's expectations for me. But if I ever fall short of those expectations, I'd certainly welcome folks telling me about it!

Welcome to Esperanza!

edit

Welcome, Charlie MacKenzie, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

High schools

edit

I'm sorry, but as I am not American and don't live in America, I know nothing about American High Schools. In England (where I have lived for the past nine years), High Schools are known as Secondary Schools, and you can find out about English Secondary Schools here. It says: The basis of the present state school system was instituted after the Second World War. Initially schools were separated into primary schools (infant schools age 5 to 7 and junior schools age 7 to 11), and secondary schools (split into more academic grammar schools and more vocational secondary modern schools), so it seems the English Secondary School system started in the '40s. Sorry I can't be of more help! Charlie MacKenzie 09:04, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

So tell me, when did they change this sytem and why? But we need to improve length of high school on wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.107.220.180 (talkcontribs)

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Numbers of years

edit

In many parts of usa, before late 1800's, there was no high school, i do not even know how many years was grade school, i know after that you could go to college at 14, get degree in 4 years, masters in 5, how is in your country?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.99.3.49 (talkcontribs)

Well guys, we need to find out, when number of years changed in usa and worldwide, i do know community colleges came in 1901, but was grade school always 8 or more, we are trying to get this straight and it is of importance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.107.1.197 (talkcontribs)

Re: High school

edit

Hey Charlie,

That does seem kind of odd. Have you edited articles about schools a lot before, where they would assume you would know a lot about it? If it's all coming from the same IP, which it seems to be, just try and make it polietly clear that they're better off asking a different source than you, and I imagine they'll get the idea. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I'm honored that you thought of me! -- Natalya 22:57, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

List of fictitious Jews

edit

I'm very impressed. I added that list as a clerical exercise after an AfD and you have gone at it like a terrier and referenced every last one, or will have in a moment. I put a note on the talk page there about an LGBT flag. No strong opnions either way, but that's where the extras came from. Fiddle Faddle 12:46, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I'm having some trouble finding a reference for Thea from Dykes to Watch Out For; the only places I can find one are wikipedia and various mirror sites, so I think I'll have to add a citation needed template and wait for someone who follows Dykes to watch out for to add a reference. I think that all of my references say that they're LGBT fictional characters, but I'll go through them and find out. Anyway, thanks again for your kind words! Well Drawn Charlie 13:04, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I added Jacob Two-Two as a fictitious Jewish because in the TV show is very clear to me that his family is from Jew ancestry, altough they are not orthodox Jewish (with the exception of his grandfather). That's why I can't add a source, only the Spanish version of the article in Wikipedia and the show itself. I'm not Jewish, I only like that cartoon. Sorry if you felt it like an offense.ArtRex1

Thanks for the compliment. By the way, Betty Boop's article seems to say that her parents are Orthodox Jews.... thereby making her Jewish, I guess? Or is the article wrong? I don't know much about Boop. Mad Jack 19:34, 16 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was just curious how a person could "seem" Orthodox Jewish? :-) Mad Jack 20:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh, it seems legit to me, especially since it's only a fictional character. BTW, being a Western-style "old timer" type doesn't necessarily mean someone isn't Jewish (i.e. her grandfather). Mad Jack 23:30, 16 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, I found a couple more good references; this says her father was Jewish (I'd guess mommy Boop was Jewish too); this says "Betty Boop’s Jewish background was influential in her rise to stardom"; and this is entitled "Betty Boop: Yiddish Film Star". Mad Jack 23:35, 16 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

The book Cryptonomicon itself makes it clear that the character Avi is jewish. However, I'm not clear on how to cite the book. Could you assist? --Afed 23:34, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for File:Gisburne.png

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Gisburne.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 07:38, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Proposed deletion of Bracha Lavee

edit

The article Bracha Lavee has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The childhood "award" will probably have an A7 declined, but no indication or evidence of notability

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. StarM 15:18, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
