Economy of India

edit

Hi, We have started work on rewriting articles linked from the India page like the History of India, Geography of India, Economy of India, etc., to Featured article status. It would be great if you can help us in the rewrite of Economy of India. I have put up a roadmap like thingy at Talk:Economy of India/temp and it would be great if you can contribute to it in anyway.Regards. pamri July 1, 2005 14:46 (UTC)

I =Nichalp «Talk»= award Bhadani for his persistent effort to tag all Indian cities with the wikiproject Indian cities tag. July 8, 2005 08:14 (UTC)
My response posted on his page:
Thanks for the barnstar - Hello Nicholas, I thank you for the barnstar for “persistent effort to tag all Indian cities”; I accept your appreciation with utmost humbleness. Actually, still a number of Indian cities require wikiproject Indian cities tag. I shall continue to identify such cities and towns and continue to put the tag. It has another dimension also: this tagging “business” also gives an idea about the “missing cities”, and to begin with stubs may be created for such missing cities and towns. Again, I thank you for the barnstar. Shortly, I will give my comments about Goa input box . Bye now.

I went to look at Bombay Talkies. Another good article! I may do some copyediting on it, but it seems to be in very good shape overall. Let's link it to Bollywood.

If you want to do more film articles, look at the List of popular Bollywood films and make articles for movies that don't have them, and then start adding films. Current films are very well represented -- people come to add their favorites all the time -- but there's really not much before the 1980s or 1970s. I keep meaning to work on it, but forgetting. We made the list so that foreigners who want to explore Bollywood movies would have a list they could copy and take to the video store. They should be looking at the old films too. (Funny that I say "they" when I'm a foreigner too!)

The article on Guru Dutt needs a filmography. Is that enough suggestions? Zora 08:19, 10 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Arabic/Devanagari scripts in Bollywood articles

edit

Dear Bhadani, we're having some difference of opinion as to the necessity of putting Arabic or Devanagari versions of actor names or movie titles in the Bollywood articles. I'm afraid this could be a difficult topic, but I would like to see what other editors who have worked on Bollywood articles think. Please come over to Talk:Bollywood to discuss it, if you have time. Malayala manorama

edit

hi,

Sorry for the delay. Malayala means something which is in malayalam language or from the land of malayalam language/kerala. Now coming to the word manorama ,which i think means anything that interests the mind or the mana.. Mana meaning the mind and rama meaning anything that is interesting. Hope this would do. Do let me know if this is ok. Cheers Jisha C J 19:00, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Malayala Manorama

edit

"ramippikkuka" means to make happy. "rama" is one which makes happy. So manOrama (mana: + rama) would mean "that which makes the mind happy." It could be translated as "entertainer." I added that to the Manorama article. Malayala means of/related to Malayalam. Malayla Manoram could be translated as "Manorama in Malayalam" or "that which makes the Malayala minds happy!"

Thanks

Your father

edit

You might want to get that first brief article you made, on your father (may he rest in peace), undeleted, and move it to your userpage space. Perhaps a paragraph on your userpage - "When I first joined Wikipedia, I was not aware of what the criteria were for notability, so the very first article I created was one for my father Hariram. I miss you, father" - linked to User:Bhadani/Hariram. He's notable in the context of your life, and in the context of your time on Wikipedia, so... *shrug*. Just a suggestion. Copy of my response to Nicholas: My dear Nicholas, my sincere thanks to you and all others for reposing faith in me. And, now that you all have expressed confidence in me, I would surely take up the role of adminship. If the wiki-community desires me to be an administrator, it is ok, I will not shirk the responsibility and take up the challenge with a sense of reverence to the community of wikipedians. It would be fine if I get the adminship; even if I do not get, my association with wikipedia will remain the same and shall continue to grow. But, my association with wikipeida is hardly 5 months old, and I feel that I should wait for few more weeks. What do you say? In case, you insist, I agree. Thanks and regards. Bhadani

Ok, if you feel more comfortable with a longer wait, I'll knock in September again. Meanwhile you could get an article up to FA status? It would certainly help your prospects, but is not essential. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:36, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

(this is the message I almost left on the wrong page) Hey, Bhadani. You made the same mistake that Mailer Diablo did on the Abby Hayes VfD; namely, you missed the part at the end of that (extremely sloppily-written) article which said that Abby Hayes is a fictional child, the protagonist of a series of rather successful novels. Minnal?

edit

A few days ago, I nominated Minnal for deletion - it is, or was, the nickname of a retired policeman from Kerala who now works in a religious charity. The discussion is almost unanimous that this is probably vanity, but it occurs to me that perhaps someone who lives closer to the area might have heard of him. Alternately, if you haven't heard of him, that's even more indicative that the article is non-encyclopedic. Have a look? DS 14:28, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I wanted to mention that your deletion comment at the above AfD looks rather unusual considering that pages can be easily moved (also since you mentioned redirects). The comment was only unusual in the sense that, without a specifically highlighted vote, you seemed to be voting delete (the first keyword appearing) while advocating a move. I just wanted to pass that along in case you felt a need to clarify. — Lomn | Talk / RfC 12:28, 7 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

// [[User:Lupin/popups.js]] - please include this line

Thanks for the reply. AFAIK, Deshastha Brahmins are from Maharashtra and are spread all over South India (I haven't heard of any community from Kerala, though), but I haven't heard of the North India bit. --PamriTalk 15:16, 24 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
Got some results after rewording the query, but those were stuff I already knew. I searched a kannada encyclopedia & did enquire at home & did see any publications on deshasthas.(BTW, I am one, hence I am slightly knowledgeable.). I will ask a few more people over this week. --PamriTalk 17:09, 24 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
The problem is you can't add stuff here without finding references, even if you know enough. Anyways, finally got some references to cook up an article. Especially, check http://deptorg.knox.edu/ansodept/student_2004/Umashankar04Brahmin.pdf

BTW, can you please change your sig to add a direct link to your talk page? I hope thats not too much trouble. Thanks. --PamriTalk 17:27, 24 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Admin notice

edit

Hi, Bhadani, congratulations on becoming an administrator. I noticed you added a message about your adminship to your user page with a big warning symbol. I wanted to express my concern at its message: in it, you direct people with concerns about your administrative actions to leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Administrators. In my opinion, the first place to leave a message of concern should be on an administrator's talk page, as I'm doing here. Even then, I'm not sure that Wikipedia talk:Administrators would be my second choice to list complaints, although that's perhaps debatable (I wasn't even aware it was used for that purpose). Anyway, it's just a suggestion. — Knowledge Seeker 04:14, 25 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Well, I think that if you like it, the template is mostly appropriate, although as I said, I feel that any notices like that should direct the concerned party to the administrator's talk page. Too often people run off to WP:AN/I to complain without even attempting to first discuss matters with the administrator. In any case, it is up to you. And thanks for creating Amber Fort—great start!—and for using my picture. The buildings there are beautiful, and it's impossible to capture it on film (or memory cards). One cannot even photograph more than a small bit of a room, such as the ceiling or a wall, so it is very hard to do it justice. I was proud of how that photograph turned out, although it only hints at the splendor of the real thing. — Knowledge Seeker 06:44, 30 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Indian District articles

edit

Bhadani,

I don't understand why you removed the Category "Districts of Uttar Pradesh" for articles that are about districts of Uttar Pradesh. Each of the articles you recently removed the categories from was about both the city and the district, and removing the category serves only to make information harder to find for Wikipedia users. Tom Radulovich 16:13, 29 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reply. A great many articles on Indian districts are about both the district and its headquarters town. For these articles, it is appropriate to have both a "Cities and towns of [state]" and a "Districts of [state]" category. I agree that where there are articles for both the headquarters city and the district that the separate articles should have one category or the other.
I am also concerned that creating a whole set of substub articles for districts separate from those on their headquarters cities, which are often only a single sentence, may be spreading too little information across too many articles. The Agra article contains a good deal of interesting information, including some about the district (its boundaries and location); the Agra District article, on the other hand, is just one sentence, and is not particularly informative--even the basic information about district area, population, boundaries, administrative divisions, etc. isn't there. It is just my opinion and not any kind of firm rule, but I think these articles should only be split once there is enough information about the city and the district to make two useful articles, but not before.
Splitting an article into separate city and district articles should also involve making sure that wikilinks in other articles that refer to the district rather than the city are directed to the new district article. This can be done by using the "what links here" tool on the city article, following the links and figuring out whether they refer to the city or the district, and changing the wikilink in the linked article where appropriate. The article Districts of Uttar Pradesh still links to Agra, for example, rather than Agra District, and there is no link to the Agra District article from the Agra article. Unless one establishes the appropriate links, no one will know these separate district stubs even exist. Whether you think the word "district" in the article titles should be capitalized or not (Capitalizing proper names is, however, both correct English and the wikipedia naming convention), it is also helpful to make a redirect page, so that both Agra District and Agra district, for example, direct to the same page. Redirects are good, and creating redirects for all likely spellings (for example Bulandshahr and Bulandshahar) and capitalizations helps prevent the proliferation of duplicate articles.
Keep up your good work! Cheers, Tom Radulovich 17:55, 30 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
And, I got all the points and the implications. And now I would surely collect sufficient information before creating tiniest of the tiny stubs. One more request - please clean the Template:Districts of Chhattisgarh, which I have created somehow (smiles) and more thanks. --Bhadani 18:01, 30 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
I will have a look at the template. Brhaspati created a very useful table on his personal page, which lists the headquarters, population, area, and population density of India's districts: User:Brhaspati/indiadistricts. A few districts are missing, but I have found it quite useful when writing district articles. Tom Radulovich 18:10, 30 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
