If you want to find out whether it's notable or not, the best thing to do is take a look around Google and see how popular the term is. If you think it's a new word, or one coined only in the article, or you think it is non-notable take it to Votes for Deletion and see if the consensus is with you. As you long as you VfD it in good faith, noone will bite you. -Splash 01:50, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

PS. I know you're not new here, but a talk page is an odd place to ask that kind of question. -Splash 01:51, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)
No problem. If the article isn't improved to explain notability soon, I'll add it to VfD. I'm still new enough to be learning how things work here, so expect me to do a few odd things. ;-)Bcat (talk | email) 02:11, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I'll keep an eye on it too (since it looks like not going far). -Splash 02:26, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

Help with Stubsensor

edit

Hi Triddle. I know this is kind of a newbie question, but…. Is an article like this, which contains a lot of statistics but little prose, considered a stub? — Bcat

Hi Bcat, I consider Comox Valley (provincial electoral district) to be a stub and in fact thats what we call a false-positive. That is that stubsensor should not of considered that a non-stub. I've added it to the false positive list and thanks for the heads up =) Triddle June 28, 2005 16:55 (UTC)
Thanks for your help! Now I'll get back to checking stub tags. — Bcat (talk | email) 28 June 2005 17:05 (UTC)

More help with Stubsensor

edit

Am I doing something wrong? It seems like there are a lot of false positives. For example, all the stubs in Category:British Columbia provincial electoral districts. — Bcat (talk | email) 28 June 2005 19:20 (UTC)

Hi again, you are doing everything correct. The false-positives stem from a couple problems but basically it is safe to say that my program has a very hard time telling the difference between human readable text and things like tables. Its been an iterative process of going through all the false-positives for a cleanup project, trying to tailor the program some more, and doing the next cleanup project. At least each time I'm able to remove entire classes of false-positives but also each time new classes creep in. This is only the third such project, so there have only been two chances for refinement. As such lots of false-positives still exist. I'll probably stop collecting false positives for this cleanup project soon as the list is already pretty big and they are following trends. Triddle June 28, 2005 19:34 (UTC)

You voted or commented on Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3-B or Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3-A or both. I have proposed a revised version, at Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3-C. This version is intended to address objections made by many of those oppsoed to 3-A or 3-B. Greeting newcomers

edit

Hey there. When you greet newcomers, if you're going to use a template it's less tacky to use {{subst:templatename}} instead of just {{templatename}}. That way at least it looks like text. Also saves the database from having to load a template every time they look at their talk page. Isomorphic 9 July 2005 16:40 (UTC)

Thanks for your suggestion; I didn't think of that. I guess a new user might be confused by a template. I'll start using subst: for my welcome notes. — Bcat (talk | email) 21:00, 9 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
PS: I've now changed all references to my welcome template to use subst:. — Bcat (talk | email) 21:36, 9 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

CSD

edit

Hi there! I am writing a short essay on the present CSD proposal and the reactions to it, because I think it shows some interesting thoughts that preside in the WikiCommunity, and such an essay may be an interesting article for the Signpost, or a useful read for anyone who wishes to propose anything in the future. Anyway I wanted to ask you about one of your votes. I believe you disagree with having a policy page that refers to a guideline page for its decisions? If so, would it help if the guideline page was cut/pasted into the policy page to ensure it doesn't inadvertently change? I can certainly understand (and sometimes agree with) people opposing an idea because of improper procedure, but if that is the case I would like to write that into the essay so that better procedures will be used in the future. Thanks for your time! Radiant_>|< 13:15, July 17, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Radiant. Sure, I'd be glad to help. Are you refering to a particular vote or set of votes? If so, which one(s)? — Bcat (talk | email) 15:00, 17 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your answer. That would be vote 3-C. Radiant_>|< 11:33, July 18, 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't think we should be able to speedy delete pages on guidelines alone. However, I wouldn't mind it if the guideline had been copied into the proposal or if somebody attempted to raise the guideline to semi-policy/policy status. — Bcat (talk | email) 19:34, 19 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Over at Manga's talk page, some have proposed using scans of graphic novels for images (rather than covers). How would I label these as fair use upon upload? Are they fair use, even? Thanks ahead of time... Kawa 18:18, 18 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kawa. You can mark an image as fair use by typing {{Fairuse}} into the summary field when uploading an image. That includes the fair use template in the image's description page. (For much more information see the full list of copyright tags.)
IANAL, but as for whether or not the images are fair use, I think they would be. However, be careful about using too many images, especially from the same source. Also see the fair use guidelines.

Deletion policy

edit

I had a question about the speedy deletion policy—I'm a fairly new contributor, and I've recently taken to scanning the Recent Changes page for edits and particularly new pages by anons, which tend to be either low in quality or "patent nonsense." However, I was wondering what the appropriate action would be for an article that contained only nonsense but whose presence would be wikipedia-worthy.

An example would be 41 Lyncis, an article certainly containing only nonsense but which could be made into a rather useful astronomy stub following ten minutes of research. For future reference, is it appropriate to mark it for SD as you had done, or would it be more useful to tag it for cleanup or cleanup-importance, or even take another action entirely?

Thanks in advance for your time and reply!

Cheers, Sophrosune (talk) 15:07, 31 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sophrosune. If an article is just nonsense, but Wikipedia should have a real article on that topic, the best thing to do is tag it for speedy deletion anyway. That way, links to the article will show up red, making it more clear to other editors that an article is needed. (Of course, you can always write a replacement yourself, too.) — Bcat (talkemail) 19:33, 31 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Aether Physics Model

edit

I noticed you were behind the deletion of the Aether Physics Model pages I was adding. You unceremoniously called it quack physics. Don't you feel any obligation to give the people posting these pages an opportunity to explain their views? Here is the full paper I was planning on posting to Wikipedia: http://www.16pi2.com/files/NewFoundationPhysics.pdf

The theory is admittedly new, but it is scientifically sound. It is both a critique of the Standard Model and a viable alternative to replace it.

There should be someplace on Wikipedia for this type of information. As far as I know, science is about presenting alternative theories and letting the best theories win.

Wikipedia:Wikiethics

edit

Hi,

We started a proposal Wikipedia:Wikiethics to state the existing policies coherently and make suggestions on improving the editorial standards in Wiki. I thought you might be interested in contributing to that proposal.

Unfortunately, a pro-porn and pro-offense lobby is trying to make this proposal a failure. They unilaterally started an approval poll although almost no one including me believe that it is time for a vote, simply because the policy is not ready. It is not even written completely.

Editors who thinks that the policy needs to be improved rather than killed by an unfair poll at the beginning of the proposal, started another poll ('Do we really need a poll at this stage?') at the same time. The poll is vandalized for a while but it is stable now. A NO vote on this ('Do we really need a poll now?') poll will strengthen the position of the editors who are willing to improve the ethics policy further.

If you have concerns about the ethics and editorial standards in Wiki, please visit the page Wikipedia:Wikiethics with your suggestions on the policy. We have two subpages: Arguments and Sections. You might want to consider reviewing these pages as well...

Hi,

I know you are interested in christianity, and I recently started a new wiki over at wikicities which is on the subject of christianity. Christian Knowledge Base is the site.

The goal is to have a knowledgebase on christianity from a distinctly "C(hristian)POV" rather than the NPOV. It is not meant to be a mere Christian Encyclopedia, but to foster a real sense of community. I'd like to include things like current events, news, stories, and anything that would add to both an understanding of Christianity, but also its enjoyment. I'm looking for help to build a resource that could really enrich the lives of Christians.

I know you are busy but I am actively seeking new sysops/admins to help me build this site up, and I would be positively thrilled if you could contribute in any capacity whatsoever. nsandwich 05:49, 24 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of Jyte

edit

An editor has nominated Jyte, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jyte (2nd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 16:32, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. Speedy deletion of Investools

edit

A tag has been placed on Investools, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read our the guidelines on spam as well as the Wikipedia:Business' FAQ for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. ukexpat (talk) 21:18, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
