Cornerstone Middle School is a public middle school located at 371 First Avenue South, Baxter, Tennessee, 38544. It is part of the Putnam County, Tennessee School District. Cornerstone serves more than 600 students in grades 5-8.

History

On January 6, 2003[1], the building that had historically housed the Upperman High School campus was opened for the first day of classes as Cornerstone Middle School. On June 22, 2004, the Herald-Citizen newspaper[2] reported that Cornerstone's first principal, Barbara Good, was to be replaced by Garry Lee.

Accreditation

CMS, like all Putnam County Schools, is 100% accredited with AdvancEd, the parent organization of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools[3].

Behavioral Strategies

Starting in 2008, Cornerstone Middle School (and all the Baxter, Tennessee schools) began to introduce the behavioral strategy of School Wide Positive behavior support.

Athletics

edit

Cornerstone offers baseball[4], basketball[5], football[6], golf[7], softball[8] and volleyball[9]. Cornerstone's mascot is the yellowjacket and the school colors are black and gold.

Electives or "Encore" Classes

In addition to core subjects (English, math, science, and social studies), CMS offers art[10], computer skills[11], gym, instrumental music, Spanish[12], and vocal music[13].

Online Presence

In 2009, the former web site (www.cornerstoneyellowjackets.com) went offline for a brief period and a new site was created.[14]
