Gerrit van Arkel was a Dutch architect who designed many of Amsterdam's most prominent Jugendstil buildings. His buildings include the Asscher diamond factory, where the world's largest diamond, the Cullinan Diamond, was cut.

The 1943 bombing of the Amsterdam civil registry office was an attempt by the Dutch resistance during World War II to destroy the Amsterdam civil registry. The bombing aimed to prevent the Nazis from identifying Jews and others marked for persecution, arrest or forced labour.
