Girolamo Frescobaldi

This article is a list of compositions by Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583–1643). It is taken from the Frescobaldi Thematic Catalogue Online (FTCO), edited by Dr. Alexander Silbiger of Duke University. The catalogue numbering in the FTCO is, in turn, based on the Opere complete, the thirteen-volume edition of the complete works published by Edizioni Suvini Zerboni between 1975 and 2018, under the auspices of the Società Italiana di Musicologia.

The FTCO is an online thematic catalogue of all compositions attributed to Girolamo Frescobaldi and a database of the early sources, modern and facsimile editions, and literature. The catalogue listings on this page are a subset of the entire catalogue, consisting of all of the published works and those manuscript works that have been associated with Frescobaldi or his assistants. The full catalogue can be browsed at the FTCO site.

Catalogue Organization

edit

The FTCO catalogue numbers are based on the volume number from the Opere complete and the order of appearance in the volume, such as F1.02 for the second work in volume 1. A composition with several major parts may have a third number, such as F1.02.03 and a work with several significantly different versions may have a lower-case suffix, such as F1.02a, to distinguish the versions.

The following table shows the thirteen volumes of the Opere complete and the corresponding FTCO catalogue numbers.

Frescobaldi published three collections of instrumental canzonas:
  • In partitura, il primo libro delle canzoni a 1-4, bc, per sonare con ogni sorte di stromenti (1628, published in Venice by Masotti, edited by Grassi)
  • Il primo libro delle canzoni a 1–4, bc, accomodate per sonare [con] ogni sorte de stromenti (1628, published in Rome by Robletti)
  • Canzoni da sonare a 1–4, bc, … libro primo (1634, published in Venice by Vincenti).

The contents of these publications are related, but not identical, and the relationships are complicated. A canzona may appear in just one, two, or all three publications, and the versions may be identical, slightly different, or radically different. Their order also differs in each of the publications. All are published in Volume 8 of the Opere complete but in a somewhat random order, so the FTCO orders them by their instrumentation, from fewer to more instruments, and assigns identical numbers to the related pieces in the three publications. The versions are distinguished by the extensions a for Canzoni (Masotti, 1628), b for Canzoni (Robletti, 1628), and c for Canzoni (1634). The appended letters are assigned consistently, regardless of whether there are one, two, or three versions. In other words, the existence of F 8.03b does not imply the existence of F 8.03a, because there is no work in Canzoni (Masotti, 1628) related to that composition. IMSLP (Robletti) IMSLP (1634)

Liber secundus diversarum modulationum (1627)

edit
This collection of concertato motets (or sacred concertos) for one to four voices and organ continuo was published as a set of part-books in 1627. Only a single copy survives, missing one of the part-books, so some of these works were reconstructed by the editors of Volume 11 of the Opere complete. There was presumably a Liber primus, but it has not been found.

Catalogue of Manuscript Works

edit

Volumes 1 and 13 of the Opere complete are devoted to manuscript works, with volume 1 containing the two 8-part masses and volume 13 containing keyboard works. The ordering of the works in Volume 13 is somewhat random, and the FTCO catalogues lost and misattributed compositions that are not in Volume 13. As a result, a different categorization scheme is used for these works.

F13 Compositions in manuscripts entered in Frescobaldi’s hand
F14 Compositions entered in the hands of Frescobaldi’s assistants (Borbone and Castellani)
F15 Compositions in early manuscripts (probably or possibly by Frescobaldi)
F16-17 Compositions in later manuscripts (most of doubtful authenticity)
F18 Spurious or misattributed compositions
F19 Compositions by others based on works by Frescobaldi
F20 Lost compositions

The FTCO further categorizes each work's authenticity as either Definite, Probably, Possibly, Doubtful, Spurious and Disputed. In general, the stylistic comparisons used with other composers, particularly Bach, are less useful for Frescobaldi. His published works are polished and fully-realized. The manuscript works are less so, as they typically represent drafts, experiments and teaching exercises for his students. The manuscript repertory represents a complement, rather than a continuation, of the published repertory. [cite].

Research in recent decades has refined the identification of the handwriting of Frescobaldi and his associates, particularly Nicolò Borbone and Leonardo Castellani, for both music and text. Borbone was the engraver for many of Frescobaldi's publications. Castellani, an organist at the Lateran, is now known to be the original collector of the Chigi manuscripts now held in the Vatican.

FTCO Title Scoring Main Source Notes [Authenticity]

Due messe a otto voci e basso continuo

edit
The authenticity of the two 8-voice masses has been the subject of lively debate. The attribution to Frescobaldi is based on his signature and several notations on the continuo part of one of the masses. The argument against is that these annotations only suggest that Frescobaldi's involvement was only as the performer of the continuo on the organ.

Fioretti del Frescobaldi

edit
The much-studied Fioretti are in Borbone's hand, with some scribblings on the back flyleaf likely in Frescobaldi's hand. Concordances between the Fioretti and other canzonas and the format of the staves suggest that these were originally instrumental canzonas, transcribed for keyboard by Borbone at Frescobaldi's request. The Fioretti are accepted as part of the Fresobaldi canon[2].
