About ME

edit

My name is Alexander Newby Bryant. I am 20 years old. I am currently working on a Wikipedia article for my Composition 1 class at Georgia Southern University. Georgia Southern is a large university in which students often become lost. You have to work hard and make your own way at GSU, buy if you do, then the university is what you make of it. Students here have to do more than just work hard. Georgia Southern students need to focus on networking and learning from acquaintances to find good professors and interesting classes. Students have to work together in difficult classes and help one another through hard times. I have not declared a major at Georgia Southern because I will be attending a Maritime Academy next semester. I have been accepted at the Texas Maritime Academy, and I am waiting to hear from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Maritime Academies offer programs in Marine Transportation that are not available at any university in Georgia. When I finish four years at the academy, I will be licensed to be a 3rd Mate to unlimited tonnage. A job in the Maritime industry, aside from being interesting, would give me both the time and the money to enjoy the leisure activities I love, such as rock climbing, backpacking, canoeing, and sleeping. Especially sleeping.

Relationship to technology

edit

I am computer literate if not computer efficient. I've used computers since I was young, but I am only a user, not a wonk. I also use my cell phone, but have no desire to dig into applications. Most on my music comes from CDs or YouTube, I do not own an i-pod, nor do I plan to own an i-pod. Why separate yourself from the world by plugging up your ears? Besides, natural noises are the true soundtrack of life.

Philosophy of Wikipedia

edit

I believe that Wikipedia has a positive effect on human society. I can not imagine another free source of information that allows one to familiarize themselves so easily with any topic. I am a new user on Wikipedia and I have enjoyed my experience so far. I plan on using Wikipedia more often as a reference source, even though I know there can be problems with the quality and content of articles.

Languages

I am a native English speaker. I've taken Spanish and visited Spain and Mexico, but I still know only a small amount.

My views on life

edit

I am an active citizen of my country. I have express my rights by voting in every election since I turned eighteen. All citizen deserve equal treatment under the law and deserve to live in a society where the law is supreme and is not subject to the whims of power. My political view is that we should strive for an open democratic republic that allows free religion, free speech, and fair trial. I would oppose any views, party, or politician who would lead us away from this ideal. You could call me a Constitutionalist.

I value hard work and I know I am a good worker. I believe I am also a good student and a good friend. I have my academic strengths and weaknesses. I am very good at science, history, and math. Unfortunately, my greatest a academic weakness is English writing, though I am trying my best to become a better writer. I think writing Wikipedia articles will help me with accomplishing this goal.

I love the outdoors. I could stay outside all day long. Some of my favorite activities are hunting, backpacking, and canoeing. I spent a semester in the wilderness of Wyoming and Utah with the National Outdoor Leadership School, which taught me a lot about how to get along with different people. I also learned that some people are heroes in little things, while those you least expect are sometimes cowards. I enjoy traveling, observing different cultures, and most importantly meeting and talking to people from different societies. I hope to one day travel the world and experience new foods, people, and traditions.

The books I get most excited about are science fiction novels. My favorites are the Lord of the Rings and The Illustrated Man, by Ray Bradbury. Books, I think, help us see life in new ways. Novels help us see people and the world in new ways, so I try to get my friends to read too.
