Rygar: The Legendary Adventure[b] is a 2002 action-adventure video game for the PlayStation 2. Developed and published by Tecmo, it was released in North America in November 2002 and in Japan in December 2002. It was released in Europe in May 2003, published by Wanadoo Edition. In 2009, the game was remastered for the Wii by Team Tachyon. Named Rygar: The Battle of Argus,[c] it was published by Tecmo in Japan in December 2008 and in North America in February 2009. It was published in Europe in July 2009 by Rising Star Games. It is loosely based on the original arcade Rygar, which was released in 1986 before being ported to multiple additional platforms.

The game tells the story of

Legendary Adventure is inspired by Greek and Roman mythology and has many enemies and worlds named after them.

It was released to generally positive reviews.

Gameplay

edit

Rygar: The Legendary Adventure is an action-adventure game in which the player character is the eponymous Rygar. His main offensive weapon is his Diskarmor, a razor-sharp spinning shield that can be thrown some distance whilst staying attached to him, similar to a yo-yo. The game is played from a fixed-camera third-person perspective, with the camera's position automatically changing relative to the player's current position.[2]

The Diskarmor has two basic attack types; light and heavy, and by combining the two attacks in various configurations, the player can initiate combos, which become more complex, but also more powerful as the game progresses.[3][4] The Diskarmor is also capable of blocking, although players cannot move when blocking.[5] Abilities can be unlocked that add other functions to the Diskarmors, such as a grapple ability that allows the player to swing between specially marked icons, or a pulley ability that allows them to pull themselves up to otherwise unreachable areas.[2][6]

There are three different Diskarmors in the game (Hades (the default weapon), Heaven, and Sea). The Hades Diskarmor best for fighting a single opponent and has medium range; the Heaven Diskarmor is designed to fight multiple opponents and has a long reach and moves in a wide circle. The Sea Diskarmor is very short ranged and not very strong, but is extremely fast.[4] Each one is capable of summoning a Familiar; Hades can summon Cerberus, Heaven can summon Talos, and Sea can summon a Siren.[4][7]

Throughout the game, the player can find numerous pick-ups. These include health replenishments, health increases, Icol (magic needed to summon Familiars) replenishments, Icol increases, offensive power increases, mystic stones for use with the Diskarmors, Sfaira (power-up points) for the Diskarmors, story-related documents, and bonus unlockables such as music, cutscenes, and concept art.[4] Mystic stones can be attached to Diskarmors and have multiple possible effects, such as increasing attack power, increasing defence power, making available new combos, granting more speed etc.[4][8]

Once the player has accumulated enough Sfaira, the Diskarmors can be levelled-up. Each Diskarmor can be levelled-up twice, and each level-up increases the Diskarmor's strength and defence, increases the strength of the Familiar, reduces the amount of Icol necesssry for summoning a Familiar, and opens up one additional slot for a mystic stone attachment.[4][9]

Plot

edit

Set in an alternate history several years after the Roman Empire's conquest of Egypt, Rygar: The Legendary Adventure takes place on Argus; a fictional Roman-controlled Mediterranean island.[10] A heavy infantryman in the Argus navy, Rygar has established himself as one of the greatest swordsmen alive, but with no family or memories of his childhood, he doesn't even know his real name.

As the game begins, Rygar is attending a ceremony in the Colosseo with Princess Harmonia when they are attacked by a group of Titans, evil beings created alongside the gods, but who were banished to the prison of Tartarus eons prior.[11] Harmonia is captured, and Rygar falls into a pit. Lying at the bottom, he is revived by a female voice and given the Diskarmor, a legendary offensive shield forged by the gods. He is then told he must stop the Titans.[12]

Setting out, he heads to the Elysian Shrine, and encounters Icarus, one of the leaders of the Titans, who speculates that Rygar cannot be "the lion of the man that Cronus talked about." Cronus was the leader of the Titans who led a revolt against the gods from Tartarus, creating the Gate of Darkness to allow the Titans to return to Earth.[13] Icarus tries to kill Rygar, but Rygar summons the spirit of Cerberus from his Diskarmor, prompting Icarus to muse, "will everything go according to the prophecy of Cronus?" He then flees.

In the Mausoleum of the Three Warriors, Rygar finds another Diskarmor, the Heaven Diskarmor, which is capable of summoning Talos. He then learns of the War of Cronus; after Cronus escaped Tartarus, the gods of heaven, the oceans, and the underworld forged three weapons named Diskarmors, giving them to three human warriors. These three warriors defeated Cronus, banishing him back to Tartarus and sealing the Gate of Darkness with the power of the Diskarmors.[14] One of them, the Warrior of the Sea, was Argo, founder of Argus.[15] The voice says that the Titans must want to revive Cronus, and urges Rygar to find the third Diskarmor, the Sea Diskarmor.

He does so, finding it to be capable of summoning a Siren. The voice then reveals herself to be Argo.[16] As Rygar heads to the Gate of Darkness's location in Mount Othrys, he is confronted by Echidna, Icarus's right-hand woman. She reveals her real name is Cleopatra, and after Rome invaded Egypt, her son Caesarion was killed, and so she ate the flesh of a Titan, becoming a Demon and vowing revenge against humanity.[17] However, when Rygar tells her that he has no childhood memories and is unaware of his true name, she muses to herself, "it can't be...perhaps it is...yes...your true name..." She then leaves and returns to Icarus. As she realises that Rygar is Caesarion, Icaurs says he knew all along, stabbing her, and explaining that he needed to manipulate her into fighting Rygar so as to fulfil Cronus's prophecy.[18]

Eventually, Rygar reaches the cave in Mount Orthys and confronts Icarus, who explains that the prophecy says when the three Diskarmors are used to open the Gate of Darkness, Cronus will be resurrected in the body of a "young lion who has killed his mother"; Rygar himself.[19] The spirit of Cronus then speaks, trapping Rygar in a beam of light. However, the wounded Echidna is able to release Rygar from the beam and toss him the Diskarmor before she is sucked into the Gate of Darkness. Rygar then realises that she is his mother.

Icarus flees with Harmonia and as Rygar pursues them, Argo explains that Icarus was once named Aristotle, and was one of the three warriors that fought Cronus, along with herself and Alexander, the Warrior of Heaven. After the defeat of Cronus, the Diskarmors were considered too powerful and were hidden away on Argus.[20] Years later, Alexander attacked Argus in an attempt to acquire the Diskarmors.[21] Aristotle defended Argus, but was betrayed by the people and banished into the Gate of Darkness.[22][23] In Tartarus, over hundreds of years, full of bitterness and despair, he allowed himself to be seduced by Cronus, becoming Icarus and vowing revenge against Argus.[24][25]

Rygar confronts Icarus, but as they prepare to fight, Argo inhabits Harmonia's body. She tells Icarus that Aristotle is still alive within him, and when she reveals that she secretly gave birth to Aristotle's child, Icarus rejects Cronus, creating a protective seal around Harmonia.[26] He then begs Rygar to kill him, and after he is transformed into Typhon by Cronus, the two fight, with Rygar proving successful.

Rygar then enters the Gate of Darkness and is confronted by Echidna, who is in the midst of being transformed into a monster by Cronus. Against her will, she attacks him, but he is able to defeat her. He is then confronted by Cronus himself. They too battle, but again, Rygar proves victorious. As he flees Tartarus, he finds the barely alive Echidna. He apologies for fighting her, but she forgives him and dies. He continues to flee but is caught in an explosion and is falling to the depths when he is saved by Icarus, who carries him to the Gate, allowing him to return to Argus. There, he sees Harmonia, and the two embrace.

Development

edit

Rumors of a Rygar remake began to spread in January 2002, when Tecmo confirmed that they were working on a new Ninja Gaiden game an untitles action-adventure game.[27] The game was confirmed in April, with Tecmo revealing it would be a PlayStation 2 exclusive. They also revealed it would incorporate elements of Greek mythology, and the cited films such as Clash of the Titans (1981) and Gladiator (2000) as influences.[28] Rygar was first shown at E3 in May 2002, when an FMV and a non-playable demo was shown.[29] At this stage of development, Rygar could use his fists for combat as well as the Diskarmor.[30] This ability was removed from the game's final build.

Remains from Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire were used as a reference to help design the world. At the start of production, in-house staff members traveled to Greece to look at subject matter.[31] Photographs were taken to help create textures. Autodesk 3ds Max was used to develop the stages and character models. The character models were then converted into Tecmo's original format and imported into Autodesk Softimage 3D to animate them. Model textures were edited in Adobe Photoshop. The opening movie began production before the game sections.[32]

Battle of Argus

edit

[33]

[34]

[35]

Much of the gameplay is the same, with a few new enemies added and a new Gladiator Mode that takes advantage of the gyrating Wii Remote. The biggest upgrade (or downgrade, depending on your taste) is with the visual design of the hero, who has a totally new look. The classic gladiator from the PlayStation 2 has been replaced with an anime-inspired hero straight out of Tetsuya Nomura's sketchbook. With spiky hair and revealing black and gray duds, our hero now has a look that feels totally out of place in the Greco-Roman universe. In The Battle of Argus, a "Gladiator Mode" was added to test the might and resilience of the player, pitting them against a grueling 30 level gauntlet. In this mode, players swing the Wii Remote with a combined button press to perform a total of three maneuvers. The standard story mode (or "Conquest Mode") integrates motion controls in a less-ambitious way, as the player has the option to finish a combo with a swing of the controller.[4]

Reception

edit

"a breathtaking masterpiece that gives Devil May Cry a run for its money as one of the best modern action-adventure titles of the early PlayStation 2 era."[50]

The initial release of the game on PlayStation 2 was met with very positive reception. Metacritic gave it a score of 83 out of 100.[36] It was a runner-up for GameSpot's annual "Best Music on PlayStation 2" and "Best Graphics (Artistic) on PlayStation 2" awards, which went to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Rez, respectively.[51] Rygar received a nomination for "Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition" during the AIAS' 6th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.[52]

However, the Wii remake of the game, released 6 years later, received average reception, 52 out of 100 on Metacritic.[37] It received a score of 1 out of 5 stars by G4 and won Worst Remake in 2009.[citation needed]

Queen Argo and her adviser were captured and very quickly the war was over. The adviser was attacked and scorned by the people for his continued refusal to surrender. All blame for the disaster was heaped upon his shoulders. As punishment, his will, his strength and his tongue were taken from him. He came to resemble one of the living dead. When Alexander saw him, he was shocked at the transfiguration. He then banished him from the land and quickly departed. The adviser's name was Aristotle. He was a great philosopher and the very master of our king. The dismay and regret of our king make it doubtful this battle will ever be recorded in any formal document. After the passing of so many years, the chain of my reason has rusted. What does this body, stained with the darkness, want? Revenge. That is what I desire. Revenge on the descendants of Argus who offered me up as a sacrifice. They did this to me even though I gave my very life to protect them. Not only my life, I gave them everything I had. They are not different from us, the Titans, they are the pure fruits of greed. Argo has turned traitor to you. You know well that your beloved wife sleeps with the pupil who betrayed you.
