Kamhlaba - means of the world in SiSwati. SiSwati is a language spoken in Swaziland and South Africa.

I attended Waterford-Kamhlaba Boarding school from 1965 to 1971 when Michael Stern was Head Master, Tony Hatton (nicknamed "The Owl" and "Khaki") was House Master for Henderson House and Deon Glover was House Master for Guedes house. Gordon Milne and "Foundress" ran Elangeni, the junior boy's dorm', although, when I first came to the school, Elangeni was for the seniors.

It was "Waterford School" for the first part of my tenure and then, after Swaziland's achieving independence from Great Britain in 1968, we were given the tag-on "Kamhlaba" which, we were told at the time, was because we were multi-racial and therefore representative of the world. The K without an "h" after it is pronounced as a hard "G." {I left Waterford-Kamhlaba at the end of 1967,but I also remember King Sobhuza II renaming the school that year.}Wm. monde mbata (talk) 04:30, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

It means "Little World." We were also instrumental in choosing the new Swazi National Anthem, which goes: "nKulu nKulu mnikhati weti bu siso thema Swati, siyatibonga tonkhe tinhlahla..." Ok, my wife says I must quit, because the neighbors are complaining. I was in the choir that sang it to the government officials who came to us with several choices. I assure you I know it all the way through, with a few minor mispronounciations. I am, after all, 53 years old now. It happens that they chose the Anthem we all liked best and that is the anthem of Swaziland today.

Anyway, I knew and admired both Matthew and Roger Parris, I am a great admirer of Richard Grant (Esterhuysen), I wish I could find Alan McGregor, Johnny Nkambule [ You must mean Johnny Nchabeleng. U-Nkambule's first name is Noah, and I'm not mistaken about that]Wm. monde mbata (talk) 04:30, 21 December 2009 (UTC)(who once called me incorrigible in a report to my dad, but who I thought a great person), William Mbatha,[aka Monde Mbata, is your neighbour to the north, and resides in the Finger Lakes Region at the southern end of Cayuga Lake, in Ithaca, in the state of New-York.]Wm. monde mbata (talk) 04:30, 21 December 2009 (UTC) Leslie and Karen McLeod, Xico Meirelles, Lyndsey Veloso, Miss Wentworth, a teacher with whom I was secretly enamoured and I wish could have stayed friends with the late Stanley Matsebula and his terrific brother Ryan, but now I live in Mexico and read as much as possible about the direction W-K has taken. By the way, if you're American and you make "Polish Jokes" you might want to bear in mind that aside from the Parris boys and Stephen Derfel Turner, the brightest kids in the school were Jan Ledahowski and Franek Roszwadowski.Reply

I visit W-K on "Google Earth" and remember the times I climbed Tom and Kelly and the many "runs" I got around that field (which, oddly, has changed shape). I mourne Michael Stern's death, because he was a genuinely good man.

nKulu nKulu bless Swaziland and Waterford-Kamhlaba.

Students are selected on merit and... regardless of their ability to pay?

edit

It says in the article that pupils attend the school, "...regardless of their ability to pay." There is no other reference to the cost of attending the school. Did some pupils have to pay? What percentage? It seems unlikely that everyone attended free of charge. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.187.233.172 (talk) 17:02, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Alumni

edit

User:Velella pointed out the alumni list has a lot of unreferenced entries; nonetheless, deleting the entire list is extreme. For example, President Ian Khama is a noteworthy Waterford alum. Anyone interested in determining which alumni are significant, please go ahead and cut down on this excessive alumni list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.215.14.238 (talk) 09:09, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I removed from the list all names that were not linked to a Wikipedia article and did not have a reference to support them. Please link any names that have an article and for those names that do not have an article, a reference from a reliable source to show that the person is as he/she is described and is an alumnus will ensure that the name remains on this list. Without corroboration anyone can add any name to a list with impunity. Please see WP:PEOPLE for more guidance. Thank you  Velella  Velella Talk   09:22, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Notable alumni

edit

To be "notable alumni", people included must be alumni who are notable. Much as Sally Field doesn't belong here (though notable, she's not an alumnus of Waterford), Fernando Honwana doesn't belong (though an alumnus of Waterford[citation needed], he isn't notable). Please see Wikipedia:ALUMNI#Alumni and Wikipedia:Write the article first. Thanks. - SummerPhD (talk) 20:36, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I see that we now have Alan McGregor (academic) and Monwabisi Fandeso added to the mix of people who are not notable alumni. Why haven't we added Sally Field yet? Perhaps we should retitle the section "Randomly selected alumni"? - SummerPhD (talk) 22:15, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Unless there is some reason this article should be exempt from the broad consensus, I will remove the red links in a couple of days. - SummerPhD (talk) 00:01, 17 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
