Caput of Robert

Tabraham's assessment of material culture at the site and conclusion, as documented on the Canmore reference, dated the motte as 14th Century. The Robertons signed the Ragman Roll and were dispossessed in favour of Douglas of Dalkeith (cf Nesbit, A system of Heraldry Vol 2). They may have resided in Auchinleck, Ayr until 1390 as suggested in charter evidence when John Roberton becomes Laird of Earnock in 1391. Tabraham is quoted by Alex Fleming in Scotland and the Flemish People stating the caput was more likely at an old Roman site above the town to the west which showed signs of medieval reuse.
