major event in the phil. history

edit

The City of Makati, or simply Makati, is one of the cities and municipalities that make up Metro Manila, the greater metropolitan area of the national capital of the Philippines. It is the major financial, commercial and economical hub in the Philippines, often referred to as the financial capital of the Philippines since many global companies have their offices and headquarters in the city. Makati is also home to the influential Makati Business Club and the Philippine Stock Exchange. Ayala Avenue, running through the heart of the central business district is often called the Wall Street of the Philippines.[citation needed]

Makati is noted for its highly cosmopolitan culture, also being a major cultural and entertainment hub in Metro Manila. Many expatriates live and work in the city. Makati is also home to many first-class shopping malls, which are located at Ayala Center and Rockwell Center. The city also has many of the country's five-star hotels like The Peninsula Manila, the Shangri-La Hotel Makati and the Intercontinental Hotel Manila. Independent business travelers also benefit from budget hotels like the Saint Illian's Inn, El Cielito Inn, The Copa Businessman's Hotel, and The City Garden Suites, while serviced apartments like The Salcedo Suites, Fraser Place Manila, The Sunette Tower, and The Oxford Suites are gaining in popularity among business-minded travelers as well.

Makati came from the Tagalog word kati, which means tide.[citation needed] This primarily refers to the rise and ebb of the tide of the Pasig River on the city's northern border. The city was also known as San Pedro Macati during the Spanish era.

Today the city is one of the most modern cities in the country and the Philippines' major global economic competitor in Southeast Asia.[citation needed] However, it faces challenges due to the disparate gap between the new city in the west, which contains the Central Business District, and the old city in the east, which is largely poor and where most of the city's slums are located. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.69.189.67 (talk) 07:39, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Informal GA Review

edit

Although this review was never formally started, I will provide one anyway.

This article does not meet GA standards yet. The article lacks sourcing in pretty much every area, see WP:CITE. All lists must be converted into prose, especially the history section. The article is missing basic information on geography and climate. Some of the pictures used lack adequate author and copyright information. For such an important city, the material could really be fleshed out to be made more comprehensive. See WP:CITYLIKE for examples.

Please restart a formal GA review when ready by following the instructions at WP:GAN. Best, epicAdam(talk) 16:41, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree that this article is not up to the usual Wikipedia standards. It reads more like a promotional brochure than an encyclopedia article. --Bruce Hall (talk) 13:44, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

<Cityname> <City>

edit

There is a discussion regarding the removal of the word "city" from the article names of Philippine cities. This may imminently affect the article name for Makati. For city names which are not unique, disambiguation alternatives are also being presented. Formal request for page move may follow after a reasonable time of discussion. If you wish to participate, please post your comments here. --JinJian (talk) 03:56, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cosmopolitan - writers' obsession to Makati's affluence

edit

I deleted some sentences that start with "With its cosmopolitan culture," and others. The word "cosmopolitan" was literally inserted in many of the article's sentence. I removed some of them. Yes, Makati is cosmopolitan as it is a city. No need to describe it as cosmopolitan,OVER AND OVER And over again. Reading the article, I felt like I'm hearing the words of a social climber. Yes, Makati is very affluent, but do we need to have its affluence described on every other sentence of this article? Guys, can we edit this article with more objectivity, please. :) --115.85.21.251 (talk) 08:04, 8 November 2012 (UTC)MonAcostaReply

Added Recent History

edit

The Magdalo Mutiny and the Glorietta explosion were added. I thought of adding a subheading for them - RECENT HISTORY. I also added the allegation of GMA's involvement in the blast. I cited a reference, of course. --115.85.21.251 (talk) 08:04, 8 November 2012 (UTC)MonAcostaReply

Deleted unnecessary sentence

edit

I deleted this "vLike other cities in the Philippines, Makati is governed by a mayor and vice-mayor who are elected to three-year terms. The mayor is the executive head and leads the city's departments in executing the city ordinances and improving public services." from the GOVERNMENT section. The statement is enough to make my cat roll its eyes. I mean, DUH! Makati has a Mayor. pfft. --115.85.21.251 (talk) 08:05, 8 November 2012 (UTC)MonAcostaReply

"MAKATI IS HOME TO" More Professional Writing PLEASE

edit

Someone keeps on writing flamboyant words in the article.

The phrase "Makati is home to" is just literally sprouting in every other sentence. Please, when writing, avoid using trite phrases like this. You can say, "Other establishments found in Makati include..." or "Other major attractions in the city are...." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monmon298 (talkcontribs) 04:15, 27 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

This is not a tourism page ==

Another example of flamboyan writing, "an exhibition of more than one thousand gold objects that celebrate the sophisticated cultures that existed in the Philippines before colonization in the 16th century"

It is like reading a tourism brochure. I changed it to "an exhibition of more than one thousand golden pre-hispanic artifacts." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monmon298 (talkcontribs) 04:36, 27 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Some foreign embassies have moved elsewhere

to Taguig or another city in Metro Manila? Please update correctly the diplomatic missions list of foreign countries in the Makati article? Some foreign embassies are no longer based in Makati. Thanks in advance. Zollerriia63 (talk) 09:16, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Boundary dispute

edit

It was found recently by the court of appeals that Fort Bonifacio is part of Makati City and not Taguig. So, officially, it's now part of Makati City. Unless Taguig files another appeal or complaint, Fort Bonifacio remains a part of Makati.Ps katchatore (talk) 11:35, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[1]Reply

Merge proposal

edit

I like to propose to merge Makati Central Business District into this article. Important reasons, beside the obvious overlap, are the extremely non-neutral/promotional tone of the Makati CBD article and that fact that it is badly sourced. Reworking and neutralising the article will only create more overlap with this article. The Banner talk 11:44, 22 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Red light district?

edit

To the gentleman from the UK who obviously have never been to this side of the earth, the city of Makati is a financial center of the Philippines known for hosting the tallest skyscrapers in the country. It does have a history of prostitution in this one small village next to where i live, but the village can't be a representation of the entire city itself. It's simply as inacurrate and misleading as Las Vegas being a red light district just because prostitution exists in one of its districts:

I'm glad we're agreed there is a red-light district in the city. You misunderstand the use of Category:Red-light districts in the Philippines. It does not mean the whole city is a red light district, but that it includes one. --John B123 (talk) 08:44, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Are you nuts? I said Las Vegas has a red-light district in Fremont Street that has the category of red-light districts but NOT Las Vegas itself. And London is NOT a red-light district even if it includes one in Kings Cross! Reverting your edit as it is a blatant abuse of the categories.--112.206.47.139 (talk) 09:56, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Please conduct yourself in line with WP:CIVIL and WP:BRD, and discuss rather than WP:EDITWAR --John B123 (talk) 10:24, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
I agree that this use of the category clearly isn't appropriate on this page per the argument made by the IP. "Red-light district" is not a defining characteristic of the city. Deli nk (talk) 11:41, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
