Sheriff 1547-8

edit

Thomas Giffard of Chillington was Sheriff in this year, according to his entry at History of Parliament. On the other hand so was Meverell, according to his It's quite possible both are right, e.g. if one fell ill and had to be replaced. Anyone able to explain the issue? There are quite a lot of problems with this list, because many of the older sources (such as primary sources) use regal years (see Regnal years of English monarchs) so not only do you need to know the year of the reign but also if the new sheriff was appointed in March, and if an appointment is before March 25 is dated the previous year from that used in modern calendar dates (see start of year Old Style and New Style dates). So as a genera rule I would take the more modern source such as the History of Parliament, over old sources like Erdeswicke. For example at the moment there is an entry
  • 1425: Sir Roger Aston of Great Heywood [with a footnote to Erdeswicke p. 63
But what Erdeswicke writes on page 63 is "Robert Aston 1 Henry VI; and Regnal years of English monarchs places the first year of Henry VI as between "1 September 1422 31 August 1423" So presumably was sheriff from March 1423 (new sytle) until March 1424 (or was it some other period?). Have I made a mistake or is using Erdeswicke as a source for a date of 1425 incorrect?

1633

At the moment with a cited source the 1663 entry is for:

1663: William Jolliffe of Caverswall Castle

but a footnotes notes

"or William Snead of Keele (MP 1660)" using the source Staffordshire Record Society (1912) p. 287

They can not both be correct. -- PBS (talk) 12:12, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
