Re the footnote (now no. "[5]") about the name of the 'property' (or "class") *** fn ***

what footnote [5] says

edit

Currently [the wikitext for] the "ref" tag for footnote number "[5]" (along with the footnote itself -- shown here ["also"] as a footnote, at the end) says:

<ref>no friendly name defined in the specification http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard#Property_List, but one might think of it as "formal name", "formatted name", or "family name"</ref>[1].

list of "suggestions" for [thinking about] what the name of the "fn" field means

edit

My first comment is about the list inside footnote [5] -- (which is <blockquote>d above) -- that includes these "examples":

  • "formal name"
  • "formatted name",

and

  • "family name"

(and maybe even

  • friendly name

too ... although that comes before the "[...] but one might think of it as [...]" part [of that footnote], and it is not enclosed in double "quote" marks...).

Perhaps that list could stand some improvement.

One idea: delete [the list entry for] the term "family name"

edit

For one thing, it seems [to me] that the term "family name" would go better with [the surname] "Doe", which is the second half of the character string "Joe Doe" (which is the field value [or is it the "display text"?] for the "fn" 'property' -- that is, the entry whose wikitext says: "<li class="fn">Joe Doe</li>").

Since that property or "entry" seems to be the only topic that is being explained (or discussed) by footnote number "[5]", perhaps the term "family name" should be removed altogether from the list in footnote number "[5]".

The surname "Doe" is not the topic that is being explained (or discussed) by footnote number "[5]". (It is only half of it ... the second half.) If that' were to change, then ... that would be a different story.

Another idea: add [a list entry for] the term "full name"

edit

The name "Joe Doe" (which seems to be the entire field value of the "fn" 'property') does sound [to me] like something that might go well with the 'field name' or term << "full name" >>.

Just my 0.02. YMMV.

Any Comments?

more info from that (authoritative) microformats.org web site

edit

FWIW, I have some comments about these 3 URLs:

  1. http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard#Property_List
  2. http://microformats.org/wiki/rfc-2426
  3. http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard

While I was editing this "Talk:" page, to use a {{Reflist-talk}} template [instance] at the end of this section, I happened to look at the web pages shown in the above "3 item" list.

The first web page [URL] there is mentioned in footnote number "[5]" of the article, which is quoted above ... both <blockquote>d in the "what_footnote_[5]_says" subsection, and ... it also has a "ref" tag (it's also shown as an actual footnote, there).

What footnote number "[5]" says, [2] may still be true; but item "#1" in the above list has a link to item "#2", and item "#2" has a link to "#3", ... and I clicked on those, in that order; and ... it turns out, that "#3" in the above list seems to have ["!"] the info that -- footnote [5] says -- "#1" does not have.

In particular, [the web page indicated by] entry "#3" in the above list, -- in the Properties section -- says this:

  • fn - name, formatted/full. required

To me, that suggests that the little "list" of ways to "think about" [the "meaning" of]

  • the name of the 'property' (or "class") *** fn ***

should include [only] these two list items:

  • "formatted name"
  • "full name"

(right?)

In fact, maybe it (footnote no. [5] in the article) should also include a mention of a link to ... the last URL -- http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard -- shown in the above "3 item" list. (right?)

Maybe even with a #Properties ["fragment" identifier], to point directly to the Properties section of that web page. (The part about "fn" is just about the first thing, right near the top of the "Properties" section of that web page.)
