I started an entry on the chain; it would be good if folks could add if there are any locations that are still open, and perhaps add a photo, as well as important dates. In addition, details of the new owner and franchise relationships could be added.

There are 2 Golden Skillets about 2 miles apart on Marlboro Pike in District Heights/Forestville MD. Are they part of the same chain? The one in the picture is an the older one.

Golden Skillets in Richmond and Greater Richmond Virginia

edit

There is a Golden Skillet that operates on 6116 Jahnke Road Richmond, VA 23225-2639. The old sign is still in use and the interior remains untouched. When you walk in you are bathed with 70s yellow and olive green. The only thing that is different is several Asian pieces of artwork. The owners are Thai and they have been operating the restaurant for many years. They use the same recipe. Richmond's own C.F. Sauer spices are used. (This information is from a local Richmonder (myself) and native Virginian.)

There is another Golden Skillet chain that operates in Petersburg, Virginia (Greater Richmond/Tri-Cities). They have a website at

Mary Brown's

edit

My understanding is that the Canadian fried chicken outlet Mary Brown's started as a Canadian franchise of Golden Skillet, but "Golden Skillet" was already trademarked in Canada. This was long before free trade. Having to rename the restaurant, the Canadian owners requested and received permission to use the name of the wife of the founder of Golden Skillet or something like that. I remember reading this in an article in the NL newspaper The Telegram. Unfortunately, I read it years ago and my memory is a bit hazy. Also, that newspaper article is not online. If somebody knew roughly the date of when this article appeared, I'd be more than happy to fish it out at MUN library and add the relevant information, with appropriate references.
