Personnel

I'm amazed of the fact, that David Gilmour played almost every instrument on the song. Where did the author get the information?

From the credits of the album present on the Atom Heart Mother page, and he didn't played every instrument, Rick played keyboards --200.118.217.125 11:14, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Did he play bass as well? The article had stated so before it was changed and now it says that Waters played it. Marcin Mińkowski (talk) 22:44, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia cannot use itself as a citation. I just reverted the change to restore Waters on bass, because I presumed that was the longest standing version, but now I see that was put in last month, and removed today, before I restored it. I suspect this may have been changed back and forth a few times in the past. And of course, nobody is adding citations! The other editor who made the change today is invited to identify his source of info, and I'll ask the editor of the change from last month to do the same. If nobody cites a source, I might be inclined to remove the whole personnel list. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 01:57, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Follow-up: there was a lot of edit warring on this issue in 2007, and I see several edit summaries which say "revert, unsourced and contradicts existing sources" but does not say what those existing sources are. I'm feeling more inclined than ever to remove the disputed section. The album cover does not have a personnel list. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 02:54, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you read a little bit further down in the article there is a section called references. There you'll find the source provided for Gilmour on bass: Fitch, Vernon. The Pink Floyd Encyclopedia (3rd edition), 2005. ISBN 1-894959-24-8 Floyd (talk) 00:40, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I wondered if that might be what it was for, but it isn't attached to the credits (to show what it's there for), and the credits have changed back and forth while the reference remains as it is. This should be fixed somehow. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 00:48, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
If we credit Waters for bass shouldn't we also credit Mason for drums? He was the band's drummer and there is no known source that Gilmour played drums either. In fact, we don't have any sources about the personnel at all. How can we even know that Gilmour sang the track? Is it enough that we recognize his voice? But then isn't it considered as original research? Marcin Mińkowski (talk) 12:09, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I believe it has already been claimed, above, that the reference at the bottom of the article states that Gilmour played all instruments except keyboards. The article did not properly connect the personnel section to the reference. If anyone wants to vouch for this claim and change the article again, referencing the change correctly, go ahead; don't be afraid that I'll revert again, because I won't if it's done right. I'm not going to change it myself because I haven't read the book for verification (which I would expect the editor to do, instead of taking someone else's word for it). --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 15:09, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's probably my fault, I guess I did something wrong a long time ago. I'll find the book one of these days, see what page it was and change the articke. By the way, I recommend the PF Encyclopedia, tons of information about Pink Floyd. Floyd (talk) 14:41, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I see the Pink Floyd Encyclopedia does verify that Gilmour played bass. It's fortunate that there's this source for it, because to a long-time PF listener like myself, it's very obvious that it's not Roger Waters on bass. David played a lot of the bass parts on PF records; I think he said somewhere that about 50% of the recorded bass in their whole catalog is him. When you hear rapid or complex bass lines -- "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" would be a good example -- it's almost certaintly Gilmour. In Musician magazine, when asked about "Hey You" he said: "Roger playing a fretless bass? Please!" Ha HA! Whatta dick. --Ben Culture (talk) 03:44, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

The insinuation that Gilmour played a lot of the Pink Floyd bass parts has been grossly exaggerated over the years and don't believe everything that he says, because not all of it is true. In reality, his portion of bass playing on the Floyd albums isn't as large as he wants people to believe.61.69.217.3 (talk) 12:15, 16 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Another question is why weren't Waters and Mason on the studio recording of the song? Was it a conscious decision to not include them or were they unavailable to contribute, hence that only Gilmour and Wright appear. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 61.69.217.3 (talk) 12:15, 16 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

It should be mentioned here that Mr Gilmour was almost sued fro copyright infringement on this song. I remember reading about this in the biography of the band, Saucerful of Secrets. Anyone know the details or have the reference? I lost that book ages ago...

Erm...you may wish to add the word "allegedly" after that! I think you may have mis-remembered. I'm just checking Nicholas Schaffner's book (third edition page 146) and I presume you mean that Fat Old Sun sounds like The Kinks' "Lazy Old Sun". Gilmour: "Maybe I ripped it off subconsciously. Who knows. They never sued me."!NH89.240.224.186 (talk) 00:15, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Interesting. Upon listening to both, I find a few minor similarities. The most striking resemblance is by far the title. For instance, I think that if "Fat Old Sun" were called "Summer Sun" or something, I wouldn't really see any similarity. I've always noticed a similarity in Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" to "Fat Old Sun". (Albert Mond (talk) 10:08, 15 August 2008 (UTC))Reply

For the record, copyright does not apply to song titles, which is why there can often be 2 songs with the exact same title. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 19:59, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have never understood it. The songs have a similar style (folk rock) but the harmony and the melody is different. Marcin Mińkowski (talk) 22:41, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

For some reason, I read Schaffner's book dozens of times, and I can assure you, there's no mention of Gilmour ever being sued for plagarism. I think you're thinking of the quote User:89.240.224.186 cited. --Ben Culture (talk) 03:46, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
