Suburbs or not

edit

In " Chaoyang District (simplified Chinese: 朝阳区; traditional Chinese: 朝陽區; pinyin: Cháoyáng Qū; lit. "facing the sun") is a suburban district of northeastern Beijing, China" I deleted "suburban" and "northeastern".

Suburban: Chaoyang is a huge district. Parts of it are downtown, parts are suburban, or even rural. Let's leave it off.

Northeastern: Chaoyang is in the northeast, but it is a district of Beijing, not of northeastern Beijing. --BsBsBs (talk) 09:07, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Suburban just means it has a mix of subdistricts of the city proper and towns/townships, i.e. not all of it is in the central urban area. --Polaron | Talk 12:55, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Not to argue with you, but the average English speaker has a different definition, bolstered by Merriam-Webster:
Etymology: Middle English suburbe, from Anglo-French, from Latin suburbium, from sub- near + urbs city
Date: 14th century
1 a : an outlying part of a city or town b : a smaller community adjacent to or within commuting distance of a city c plural : the residential area on the outskirts of a city or large town
2 plural : the near vicinity : environs
I happen to live in Chaoyang District, and just looking out of the 40th floor window tells me that the definition above does not apply, at least for my part of Chaoyang, the CBD. It's better without an adjective ...--BsBsBs (talk) 14:32, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
You misunderstood me, "suburban" is just a translation used by urban demographers for districts of China that are not fully urban, i.e. districts with some rural area. It is true that part of Chaoyang is in the city proper but part of it is also in rural townships. --Polaron | Talk 15:08, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
No misunderstanding. My background is marketing, with a big dollop of demographics. With the same background, I'm trained to be aware how the common reader perceives a word. I'm well aware of the Chayoang monstrosity. We always laugh when someone comes to town and says: "I'll be staying in a hotel in the Chaoyang District." --BsBsBs (talk) 15:35, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Updated population stats?

edit

The linked spreadsheet gives a population of 3.64 million (2.802 resident and 0.84 migrant) in 2005. That is eight years ago. Most pages I scanned to use Wikipedia as the source for Chaoyang population, others give a population of 3.5 million. It strains credulity that the population hasn't grown in 8 years (though 3.5 million residents + X migrants is possible). Anyone with a reliable and recent source for population figures?

The article states that Chaoyang is the second largest district. It is presumably the largest, but I would refrain from changing that until we have updated figures. jax (talk) 13:30, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Better specify the boundaries?

edit

Could the boundaries of Chaoyang be given a little more clearly? The article now says nothing about northern or southern boundaries, and as to east and west it gives only extreme points. The featureless outline map in the article is no help. Colin McLarty (talk) 06:02, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
