Defunct townships?

edit

Recently, several of the townships were put into a list of townships that no longer exist. I'm wondering why townships would suddenly become defunct? What happenned to the space those townships previously occupied? Were the townships renamed? --MatthewUND(talk) 22:49, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

As I understand it, these defunct townships no longer elect township officials or have a method of government. At that point they ceased to exist as an organized area within a county. I found out by contacting my parents who live in one of those extinct townships. They hadn't realized that by allowing the township government to end it ended recognition of the township as a distinct area of Adams county. 11 April 2007.
