Gray is a surname of English and Scottish origins.

In most Scottish instances, the name "Gray" is from the Germanic Scots language, and is cognate with Old English, "græg", meaning "grey", possibly as a hair colour, or perhaps due to blue eyes... As blue wasn't a distinct colour at the time of origin and was a variant of gray.
