Dhurkot Cave, also known locally as Bichitra Cave (विचित्र गुफा), is a prominent geological and tourist site located in Dhurkot Rural Municipality, Gulmi District, Nepal. It has garnered recognition for its natural formations, historical significance, and cultural heritage.
Location and Discovery
editDhurkot Cave is situated in Dhurkot-5, approximately 18 to 21 kilometers west of Tamghas, the district headquarters of Gulmi. Discovered in 1988 by Janardan Bhandari, a local resident who marked its location with a signboard, the cave has since become a popular destination for both local and international tourists.
Geological Features
editThe cave extends approximately 185 meters in length, featuring a primary entrance along with several natural openings. Inside, visitors are captivated by its natural formations, which include stalactites, stalagmites, and unique rock shapes. The lush green surroundings further enhance the cave's natural beauty.
Historical and Cultural Significance
editDhurkot Cave holds significant cultural and historical value. It is adorned with intricate religious carvings and symbols, reflecting its importance as a spiritual site. Local religious leaders, including Guru Ramchandra Das of the Arvindra Ashram, have studied and promoted the cave's cultural heritage.
Tourism and Development
editThe cave has emerged as a notable tourist attraction, particularly following the visit of 17 French tourists, marking its first international visitors. The Cave Committee and Dhurkot Rural Municipality have celebrated such visits with traditional ceremonies, fostering cultural exchange and tourism development in the region. Notable Nepali figures, such as Pradeep Kumar Gyawali and Lila Mani Paudyal, have also visited the cave, underscoring its growing national importance.
Efforts to develop Dhurkot Cave as a tourist destination have received substantial support from local, provincial, and federal governments, with investments exceeding Rs. 20 million. These initiatives aim to improve visitor amenities and preserve the cave's natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
