The railroad of The Great Western Railway Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in central Colorado. The main line extends from Longmont to Eaton, 42.511 miles, with branches from Johnstown to Welty, 6.213 miles; Officer Junction to Loveland, 6.583 miles; Johnstown to Wattenberg, 24.973 miles; and from Milliken to Elm, 4.731 miles; making a total of 85.011 miles of main track. The carrier also owns and uses 25.725 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 110.736 miles of all tracks owned. It reports for the year ending December 31, 1918, that it handled 449,661 tons of freight, of which 303,765 represented products of agriculture, most of which were handled for the controlling interests, the Great Western Sugar Company.


CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated October 17, 1901, under the general laws of the State of Colorado. It was organized October 17, 1901. By several amendments to its original articles of incorporation its purpose of incorporation was amended to include the construction and operation of a railroad from Denver to Eaton, Colo., with branches in Larimer, Weld, Boulder, and Adams Counties, Colo.

The owned mileage of the carrier, amounting to 85.011 miles, was acquired partly by construction and partly by purchase as indicated in the statement below:

In addition to the above-described property the company records the purchase from The Great Western Sugar Company in February, 1914, of certain terminals located at Windsor, Loveland, and Longmont, Colo. No details in connection with the construction of this property were obtained. Of the road acquired by construction, the portions from Loveland to Welty, Colo., and from Johnstown to Milliken, Colo., were constructed under contract by the Loveland Construction Company and the remainder was constructed under contract by the Northern Construction Company. These two construction companies were organized and controlled by The Great Western Sugar Company. No details were obtained in connection with the construction of the property formerly owned by The Denver, Laramie & Northwestern Railroad Company which was purchased from M. S. Radetsky.
