IT IS the duty and the privilege of the remainder of thisbook to deal with the higher activities and the spiritualwealth of Texas, with human welfare and human prog-ress. Here it is our humbler task to summarize from theCensus the material results, measured in dollars, of the work-ing of the people of Texas with the land upon which theylive. The Census summary is very incomplete. It takesno account of the strength or the weakness of the people,of the smiles of children and the good deeds of men, of sum-mer breeze and bright sunshine, of the fishes in the sea andof most of the minerals in the earth, of the coming rains andof future crops.
